The BBDB section of the latest manual recommends the following

To enable BBDB, add to your ~/.emacs
  (setq bbdb-mail-user-agent (quote message-user-agent))

I'm just wondering why this is not

  (setq bbdb-mail-user-agent (quote mu4e-user-agent))

Hi,
Because in most cases mu4e relies on message mode to compose emails. There is a possibility to use mu4e itself to compose messages but I understand it is not has stable and developped as emacs's message mode.

   Best,

Charles.

Does that mean then that I should replace

     (setq mail-user-agent 'mu4e-user-agent)
by
     (setq mail-user-agent 'message-user-agent)

That should work just fine, same for bbdb-mail-user-agent. If not,
please file a bug. I'll update the docs.

Cheers,
Dirk.
