Song: Mere mehboob tujhe meri mohabbat ki kasam
Movie: Mere mehboob (1963)
Singer: Mohd. Rafi
Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni
Music: Naushad

mere mehboob tujhe meri mohabbat ki kasam
phir mujhe nargisi aankhon ka sahaara de de
mera khoya hua rangeen nazaara de de

ae mere khwaab ki taabir meri jaan-e-ghazal
zindagi meri tujhe yaad kiye jaati hai
raat din mujhko sataata hai tassavur tera
dil ki dhadkan tujhe aawaaz diye jaati hai
aa mujhe apni sadaaon ka sahaara de de
mera khoya hua rangeen nazaara de de

bhool sakti nahin aankhen woh suhaana manzar
jab tera husn mere ishq se takraaya thha
aur phir raah mein bikhre thhe hazaaron naghme

yaad hai mujhko meri umr ki pehli woh ghadi
teri aankhon se koi jaam piya thha maine
meri rag-rag mein koyi barq si lehraayi thhi
jab tere marmari haathon ko chhua thha maine
aa mujhe phir unhi haathon kaa sahaara de de
mera khoya huaa rangeen nazaara de de

maine ek baar teri ek jhalak dekhi hai
meri hasrat hai ke mein phir tera deedaar karoon
tere saaye ko samajh kar main haseen taj mahal
chandni raat mein nazron se tujhe pyaar karoon
apni mehki hui zulfon ka sahaara de de
mera khoya hua rangeen nazaara de de

dhoondta hoon tujhe har raah mein har mehfil mein
thak gaye hai meri majhboor tamanna ki kadam

ek yahi mera ilaaj-e-gham-e-tanhaayi hai
teri furqat ne pareshaan kiya hai mujhko
ab to mil ja ke meri jaan pe ban aayi hai

Sweetheart, swear in the name of my love,
Please give me the support of your flower-like eyes,
Please grant me the colourful vision that I lost

O meaning of my dreams, the ghazal of my life,
My existence keeps on thinking of you
Day and night thoughts of you pester me
My heartbeats invariably call out to you
Please give me the support of your voice,
Please grant me the colourful vision that I lost

My eyes will never forget that enchanting scene
When your beauty had collided with my love
And then on the path were strewn thousands of melodies
I had gifted all those melodies to your voice
Please give the support of those melodies to the music of my heart
Please grant me the colourful vision that I lost

I recall the first moments in my life
When I had sipped a cup of wine from your eyes
In my every vein, there were flashes of lightning
When I had touched your velvety hands
Please give me the support of those hands
Please grant me the colourful vision that I lost

Having had a short glimpse of you once,
My wish is to behold you once again
Mistaking your shadow for the beauteous Taj Mahal,
I've been loving you with my eyes on moonlit nights
Please give me the support of your fragrant tresses,
Please grant me the colourful vision that I lost

I've been searching for you in every path, in every gathering
The helpless feet of my desire have become exhausted
Today is the last day of my expectations
Who knows tomorrow where I'm and where you're, beloved?
Please give me the support of your gazes for a couple of moments
Please grant me the colourful vision that I lost

Please come before me and unveil your face
This is the only cure for the sad loneliness of mine
Being parted from is you has made me frustrated
Do meet me now, as this has taken a heavy toll on my life
Please give my heart the support of forgotten memories
Please grant me the colourful vision that I lost

Thanks, Suresh. It is long!  My friend used to sing this and I have heard this many times. Now I shall know the meaning.

Have you come across a longer song in Malayalam? If so, I would like to know...

I know this song, but never realised how long it is. Good thing the BGMs aren't even four bars long...:-)

Here's the Lata version. The lines are exactly the same as what Rafi had sung, except that out of the six stanzas, only 1, 3 and 6 are included.

Magic of a great song !

Excellent Suresh!
You've made the tough urdu usages as simple as ones mother tongue.
Naushad is the true king of Gazals!
And special thanks for the Latha version.
I hadn't seen this before.
our general group was debating what a real Gazal song is like.
This is a good example, isn't it?

Jayashree, thanks a lot for your comments and appreciation.

Madan Mohan has been called the finest exponent of ghazals in Hindi film music, but then Naushad is Naushad!
You said you weren't so familiar with "Jab dil se dil thakraatha hain", another Naushad composition. That can be classified as a ghazal too!

As for "Mere mehboob tujhe", this can be termed a ghazal in every sense.

But then what we think is not often true. See this:

Naudhad almost always used to give multiple tunes to same line..

This particular, very very long song, also has many tunes.. You can sing the same line "mere mehboob tujhe" in all the tunes in this song.. Just try it out.. The credit of course, goes to lyricist and the MD..

You are right, Vikas. The structure of each is line is identical. You can take the tune of "teri aankhon se koi jaam piya thha maine" and apply it to "raat din mujhko sataata hai tassavur tera"
