tls on mosquito_pub, works mqtt-spy

I'm trying to get mosquitto_pub to work using tls.

-mosquitto_pub works if I use a username and password.

-I can connect to the broker using tls if I use mqtt-spy.

Here is my mosquitto_pub cmd...

mosquitto_pub -h xx.xx.xx.x -p 8883 -t lltest/test -m "hi people" --cafile broker-prod-cacert.pem --cert gateway_prod.cert.pem --key gateway_prod.key.pem

-When I run this I get the error: Error: A TLS error occurred.

In mqtt-spy (where it works) I have to check the box for "Client Key in PEM format".  Is there something comparable option in mosquitto that I need to set?
