publishing contents of a binary file with Paho

I have not found the answer to this question in on-line documentation; apologies if I have missed something.

I understand that when using Paho's publish() method, the payload can be of any type, including binary.

If an application is publishing a photo, let's say a PNG file, is there a straightforward way to specifiy "the contents of this file" and simply use the file name?
