send and receive data in the same session (sleeping client)

What kind of message should a sleeping client use to publish its data and check for input messages (buffered in the server) in the same session?

The client can't use PINGREQ because this message may not be used with the PUBLISH messages from the client.
If the client use CONNECT how to know when the client may disconnect from the server (If the server has no buffered messages)?
