Hi,

I'm wondering what the recommended maximum number of participants are for a
Thimble + together.js make ? I have 35+ youth at one event, trying to
sort out, what size collaborative groups should be to avoid confusion/bugs
in the software.

It seems like I can get away with one Persona account per Make with
together.js, is that true?
After the make, is there any record of authorship besides the Persona
owner? (ie: collaborators list)

Thanks,

-Emma

Hey, Emma!

That size is definitely going to be crazy :) It tends to produce fun but unpredictable results in groups that big. I would suggest breaking into smaller groups, around 5, but perhaps others can chime in with more facts :)

It won’t record different authorship, no - will only be under the name of the person who invited others to join.

+1 to the suggestion to hack in small groups, since together.js gets tricky
the more people you add. ^-^

To save yourself from login pain, you could set up a shared account for the
event, or even one per group. Depending on what you want them to do after,
you could give them the login info for the shared account and/or help them
set up a personal one afterward so it doesn't cut into valuable event time.

Hi Emma!

Groups of 3 worked well for me at a Hackathon last fall. There were odd moments where the connection would break and edits would not show up, so I recommend saving work frequently. I also suggest having individuals work on different pieces of the code (i.e. one person works on css, one person works on html… or one works on text, one works on images) so that they are not rewriting each others work without knowing it...The live view/location of their cursor is delayed.

Let us know how it goes! Sounds fun!

Thanks Brett, Michelle, Julia,

Will do. The focus is discussion on open source contribution, so yes as
you suggest Julia - each team member will have a different role (design,
content, code) , I'm creating a teaching kit for this, which I would love
to send your way for review before I actually use it. We don't have a ton
of time - tasks will be assigned in some random, fortune cookie way.
avoiding setup lag is super important, thanks for tips.

Sounds like a fun experiment, I say push on it, see how many people you can fit in the phone booth so to speak.

Happy to look at the Teaching Kits

Emma, because I know you already have the work of preparing for this event
and building the agenda well under way, I'll hold off on pestering you
about codesigning that teaching kit -- and this way, we can use your
insights and photos from the event to create the activities for it!

Best of luck until then -- we're rooting for you out here!
