Has the dust settled on the FF/Flash issues? I am trying to get Flash working
on all sites, so I uninstalled all versions I previously had (Shockwave, flash
plugin 64 bit, and flash plug-in active-X.

Now what I cannot figure out is, which version of Flash should I install?

(Or even better, is there a third party flash player that will work with all
flash based videos?)

When I go to Adobe's download page I am presented with:

Adobe Flash Player 11.6.602.180 (15.7 MB)
Your system: Windows 64-bit , English, Firefox

Is this going to install the problematic 64 bit plug-in that Firefox is not
capable of using?

I have opened this can of worms because for the last couple of years, "some"
flash videos simply will not play. At YouTube they always play, but e.g., ...
I was at funnyordie.com the other day and I can not get a single one of their
videos to play (if hosted at YouTube, I can). I am hoping that removing all
other versions and installing the one correct version for my computer will
resolve these issues. I am hung at the decision point right now. Which
version to install?

I do use Flash Block, but I disable it and restart FF - and still no workie.
I do not think Flash Block is the issue.

I always download the EXE installer(s) for Flash here:
<https://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/distribution3.html>

Fx = Plugin-based browsers

Before installing I use Flash uninstaller:
<http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html#main_Download_the_Adobe_Flash_Player_uninstaller>

Well okey, dokey then. I installed the latest at Adobe's site.

And now I've found that my problem - at one site in particular, "funny or
die," - was the need to "allow third party Flash content to store data on your
computer."

Oh well. At least I now have a recent Flash plug-in that works.

Or that appeared to work. Crashes all the time with a runtime error (in
FF17.0.5ESR).

Is there an alternative to Adobe Flash that works?

Yes, HTML5. It will still take some time to fully replace Flash though.
I do not run a 64 bit OS, or Flash 64 bit. But I believe you need to
install a version of Flash compatible to your browser. I.e. if your
browser is 32 bit, you'd also need to install the 32 bit version of Flash.
Obviously there are different versions of Flash for IE (ActiveX) and
Firefox.

... like probably never, ... not fully.

Flash has always been a thorn in my browser. Steve Jobs was right to keep it
off of iPhones and iPads due to it's instabilities.

Correct. The adobe download page listed my OS as 64 bit and browser as
Firefox, so it steered me to the ".... 11x32 mssa_aih" download (WTH?? ... I
believe 32 stands for 32 bit). And yes, there are two "main" versions: an IE
version and an "other browsers" version. My laptop and desktop now both hang
when Flash crashes (which is often) - until I find and close the buried error
window. I'm going back to 10.3. Now where was that link I saw? (I am not
concerned with security as I block all Flash, unless it is to show a video).

I do not understand this reply. Please explain. I also have Windows 8 on a 64-bit machine and no flash works. When using Google chrome it indicates it only works on the desktop. That makes no sense either.

If you want a general media player that can also play Flash, consider
VLC. Its plugin will play *.swf files in Firefox.
