LG/SB supports both formats.
Why should a user enter it's data to the SQlite based calendar and not
to the ICS based. Especially if he wants to use the data with other
calendar applications ... like "Rainlendar"?

For the import/export of calendar data there is a specific XPI:
http://autoexport.sunbird-kalender.de/de/
(sorry I think that's written in German)

In my opinion there is no SQlite vs ICS question. As you said
Sunbird/Lightning supports both formats. You can use the storage
provider or ics files for local calendars. This is possible since
several releases. The storage provider was chosen as default
provider for performance reasons if I remember correctly. The
extension you mentioned just combines the advantages of the storage
provider with the possibility to keep backup copies in ics format.

Thanks Stefan.

Because of heavy performance issues with SQlite LG 0.8 (and 0.7 ??) at
least for the moment I would prefer to use ICS format. Mainly because a
calendar with ICS format has much more use especially when used with
other calendar programs.

But for an GENERAL orientation, what is a rule of thumb to go with
SQlite or ICS.

Can you help for that ... or anyone else ??

Whenever you edit an event with ics the whole calendar-file has to be
parsed and written. If you use sqlite, it writes the event to a very
efficient database-enigine.
