Somehow we don't seem to have a Firefox Media module. The Firefox media
team has always operated as if one existed but it occasionally gets
raised that there isn't one. This email is an attempt to resolve that.

The module would be responsible for the development of the HTML 5 media,
video and audio elements and associated APIs such as Media Source
Extensions and Encrypted Media Extensions.

I'd like to nominate Chris Pearce as the module owner. He has been
involved with the Firefox media implementation since near the beginning
of the video/audio HTML support, having worked on all aspects of the
implementation.

As peers I'd suggest Anthony Jones, Matthew Gregan, Edwin Flores,
Jean-Yves Avenard, Gerald Squelart, Ralph Giles, and JW Wang. These
people are already contributors and reviewers for media code.

Name: Media
Description: HTML Media APIs
Module Owner: Chris Pearce
Peers: Anthony Jones, Matthew Gregan, Edwin Flores,
Jean-Yves Avenard, Gerald Squelart, Ralph Giles, JW Wang
Source Dirs: dom/media
Bugzilla Component(s): Video/Audio
Discussion Group: mozilla.dev.media

Please post followup questions/comments to .governance.

What is the plan for the Core -> Video/Audio, Video/Audio Recording, and
Web Audio (are there more?) components? Would they be graveyarded?

I think it makes sense to keep WebAudio and Recording as separate
bugzilla components, since normally different the people work on these
two chunks of code, and it makes filtering bugmail easier!

I certainly don't have a deep knowledge of WebAudio or Recording,
karlt/padenot would be the knowledgeable parties for WebAudio. I'd be
fine with WebAudio being its own module with one of those two in owning.

I don't think I should be module owner of the Recording code, I've
hardly worked in that code. Normally people in Taipei work on it, but
Roc normally reviews patches that land there, so he's the de-facto owner
I guess.

Also, we should explicitly disclaim ownership of dom/media/webrtc and
webrtc related directories; that remains in the "WebRTC Media" module.

What would happen to the existing Core -> Video/Audio component with the
addition of the Firefox -> Video/Audio component you are proposing?

I suspect there's some confusion here between bugzilla components and
governance modules.

We're not proposing a Firefox -> Video/Audio component. Maybe that
wasn't clear. We will keep using the Core -> Video/Audio component.

Should we include media/gmp-clearkey in the Source Dirs?
(Maybe others?)

Web Audio is already a module
<https://wiki.mozilla.org/Modules/Core#Web_Audio>, although I should
probably ask karlt whether he would like to become a peer.

Yes, we should claim these subdirs of /media/:

gmp-clearkey/
libcubeb/
libnestegg/
libogg/
libopus/
libstagefright/
libtheora/
libtremor/
libvorbis/
libvpx/
omx-plugin/
rlz/

I have added the "Media Playback" module to the modules Wiki.

(I appended "Playback" to the name to disambiguate between WebRTC module
names also containing "Media").

Should there be some explicit mention that Web Audio isn't included? It is
a little confusing to somebody who doesn't know otherwise.

I have updated the description to say WebAudio is not included.
