Hi,
As previously announced, a new project is available for translation:
"Firefox Screenshots".
https://pontoon.mozilla.org/projects/firefox-screenshots/

Firefox Screenshots is a new feature that lets you take clips and
screenshots from the Web and save them temporarily or permanently. It
consists of an add-on and a website, but currently only strings for
the add-on are available for translation.

The deadline for the add-on translation (32 strings) is April 11. I'll
follow up here as soon as strings for the website are available.

Based on the survey results (thanks to all who took time to answer),
"Firefox Screenshots" needs to remain untranslated e should not be
transliterated. The good news is that most strings will not contain
the brand, but an action/noun that can be localized (screenshot, shot,
etc.).

I'll file a bug to track the results of that discussion, and share it
here as soon as it's done.

Hi Francesco,
is there a way to test the add-on and our translation?

Best regards

See
https://pontoon.mozilla.org/projects/firefox-screenshots/

There's a new section ("Project resources") that links to useful
resources, in this case the test add-on
https://pageshot.dev.mozaws.net/homepage/install-test-local.html

I don't know exactly how often is updated (yet).

Thank you Francesco for the pointer.

@everyone testing:
pay attention what you are screenshotting, deleting a shot is currently
not working :)

Cheers

Me and Andreas translated Firefox Screenshots on Pontoon during the Swedish Community IRC meeting tonight and the strings are now 100% translated into Swedish

Hi,

the buttons are too small for Sorbian. The button text juts out on the
left and on the right.

Can you file an issue here? A screenshot of the problem would be
extremely useful

Actually, I filed one directly since it happens also in Italian

Hi,

Two questions:

For ambiguous strings like "Out of order", is there a review for proper
localization comments? Does it mean something didn't work or that it was
literally out of order as in a different sequence? What is the subject
exactly? A bit difficult to translate if it's unclear what should be
communicated to the user..

Didn't we have a general rule for not having strings which contain other
strings? And where the localizer is never safe assuming it's only going
to be used in a single context in the future too? I'm talking about
terms string here as this is something I've seen in another project
recently as well.

(I don't normally mind filing bugs but I feel spending my time doing
that in cases which are not locale specific is not the best use of my
scarce time, and these two types keep recurring in different projects)

Best,
Merike

Hi Merike,
It's the title for the error message in case something doesn't work
(e.g. "Service is out of order"), nothing to do with order of elements.

Strings and comments are generally reviewed before being exposed to
localization, in this case I didn't think we needed one (but I'll add
it, given it turns out to be misleading).

The comment you see is a developer note that says "here start the error
strings", it's not really meant for localizers. Unfortunately properties
file don't have section comments, and tools bind a comment to the
following string.
https://github.com/mozilla-services/screenshots/blob/master/locales/en-US/webextension.properties#L18

Note that there are projects were comments and even strings are not
reviewed at all before being exposed.

We don't have a rule to prevent strings being used in other strings,
quite the contrary. That's the only way to have localizable strings
without relying on concatenation, or exposing a lot of unnecessary HTML
code (like in this specific case), until we have better solutions (l20n).

These strings (Terms, Privacy Notice) are not reused in a different
context, if they are, it's a bug and it should be fixed.

Is the review dependent on project importance or something else? Is there a way for the localizer to know which are which? I'm much more motivated translating reviewed strings for obvious reasons.

Ah, I remembered it the wrong way around then. If not reused in different context all is good :)

All new project that are announced on the mailing list and enabled on
Pontoon go through an initial review, since we actually are in charge of
setting up the project. Part of the initial assessment is to check
strings for obvious issues, or missing comments.

Recent cases are Activity Stream, Firefox, Test Pilot website and
add-ons. List includes major projects like Focus for Android/iOS.

Once enabled, sometimes the review happens post-facto, as in I don't get
a warning before they merge strings, and Pontoon automation just does
its job. :-\

Mozilla Foundation projects are reviewed by Théo, mozilla.org by Peiying.

Looking at Pontoon, the ones always getting a post-facto review are:
AMO*, Firefox Accounts, MDN, Mozillians, SUMO.

I would also add Thunderbird, SeaMonkey, Lightning to that list, since I
don't think we have any localizers working on central for them (but I
could be wrong).

You will see an update for one string landing in the next hours.

The string

By using Firefox Screenshots, you agree to the Screenshots
{termsAndPrivacyNoticeTermsLink} and {termsAndPrivacyNoticePrivacyLink}.

needs to be updated, replacing "Screenshots {terms}" with "Firefox
Cloud Services {terms}".

Since Firefox Screenshots is becoming part of Firefox, its Terms are not
separated anymore, and this wasn't caught earlier in the migration from
a stand-alone Test Pilot experiment.

I've updated the deadline to make it less confusing (the original one
was April 11).

Hi,
Quick update on this project: Firefox Screenshots is now scheduled for
release with Firefox 55 (initially it was 54).

We're still waiting for the server strings, they should be available
for translation next week.
