Is there a way to kick off the garbage collector from an extension?

I'm building a Zotero extension that causes - for reasons yet unknown - Firefox to balloon to 4GB of memory consumption before it crashes. If I chunk the work the extension does and kick off each chunk manually, memory grows a few 100MB but very quickly goes down to baseline. Is there a way for me to kick off garbage collection between my chunks so I can have the extension do a full run without taking down Firefox?
