So .. whats the deal with MorLUG?

I was trolling around the internet and came across JP's name and thought
"hey. haven't heard from him in a while"

I noticed Morlug.org is no longer resolving either :-/

Funny you asked that.  I was thinking just the same thing Tuesday, in fact I was talking it over with a coworker.  Too bad too.

apparently we only updated one of the domains when we moved the server.   i moved over the most pertinent of the wiki info to the groups site, the rest are moved over.

sorry for the quiet, we've had a stupidly busy year with new people and lots of new stuff going on.   sadly, we even have the next sessions planned, but just getting moving on them is for some reason a roadblock.  morlug (threewide devs at least) needs a wife, someone to nag and complain and to cause movement :)

I am still around, but I moved to Ohio, where I've got a software
engineering position at Babcock & Wilcox (babcock.com). The nice thing
is that I use 99% Linux here, the 1% is that Windows application to
complete weekly timesheet forms at the end of every week - a new thing
for me after academia, but one can learn to live with that. Of course,
most people have Windows on their company-provided laptops, but I
dual-booted mine with Fedora 10. The IT staff is also Linux-friendly,
running RedHat internally, and they helped me to setup networking on
my Linux workstation. If it was not for the status-quo, I think the
whole company could be converted to Linux without major hassle.

So, I will not come to Morgantown often but wish you well with Linux
promotion, and it would be nice if you could find the way to keep the
group alive. And please, keep me on the list, if any.

Cheers,

Andrei

I can do the next talk. I could do a talk on command line tools for
analyzing system performance. I plan to go over process level tools
(strace, ltrace, etc), disk IO tools (iostat, lsof), system memory
tools (free, slabtop) and network tools (netstat, tcpdump). I'll try
to keep it under 45 minutes, plus some time for questions and answers.

How about the 19th of this month (Thursday evening) at 6:30pm?

Just so that I have a general idea of how many people are coming,
please let me know if you plan to be there.

Brian, I love the idea but can not make it anytime in the next month or so.  If you do it soon, is there any way to record it and post it do you think?  At least some sort of presentation or something?  I could really use this knowledge.  I know a few of the commands, but my knowledge on this topic very lacking.  Unfortunately it is one of those things where you don't know what you don't know.  Couple that with the fact that if I don't run into issues I don't find a need to look for the information.  Since current performance seems acceptable, I haven't looked into it further.

Another thought is if you (or others) can try to optimize a few systems to give baselines of what would be considered good performance for a variety of such hardware, I would expect that to be very helpful to those who don't have much experience with this or much variety of systems.  As you well know, one number doesn't mean much until you compare it to other numbers on similar systems with different configurations.

So far, most of the responses that I got stated that they won't be
able to come. Let's try a few other dates:

February 23rd (Monday)
March 3rd (Tuesday)
March 10th (Tuesday)

So, if you're interested in coming, write back to me privately about
which dates work for you and I'll pick one that suits the masses.
February 23rd is my preference.

Brian,

I think you've got a great idea for the next talk.  As Thomas said, a lot of the problem lies in not knowing what you don't know.  While I've used the network tools before and a number of the non-network system performance tools, I've long forgotten most of the latter.  I also agree having two or more identical systems for comparison would be very useful for demonstration.

My only restriction is that I can't do the 19th or 23rd, but the March dates work just fine.  (Thursdays won't work in general until April, as there's a ham radio class starting up next Thursday that I'm hoping to take.)  I'm also curious if the weekend has been discussed as a possibility in the past.  It seems it would be a good idea, particularly for those who need to commute to Morgantown.  Perhaps that would give Andrei more opportunities to participate in meetings.

This is open to the group: I wonder if things get ironed out, and the group has more regular meetings if we could organize projects for some of us to work on in smaller groups -- perhaps between meetings or simply ongoing.  I think this would be tremendously useful to those involved.  As Thomas said, it's difficult to learn the ropes without purpose for doing so.  Here at the library, working with Mike, I use Fedora on one machine, Windows XP on another and CentOS on our development server.  Most of my work is limited to PHP development, svn, and occasional shell scripting.  These days I find it difficult to know which distribution(s) is/are worth using, let alone getting a project going at home on a spare server machine.  (I'm still running Feisty Fawn on my laptop.)  I may be alone or part of the minority in this, but I'm sure there are some in the group who would be interested in working on some projects, and who would also have the time to do so.  Please let me know.  I'm curious if there are others in the same boat.

That's about all I have for now.

Regards,
John
