Populate and shards

Hello everyone,

I'm quite new in MongoDB and NodeJS so I don't have experience in sharding part of it.

I know that I can add shared key in mongoose but how that works when I'm populating collections.  

For example, I have sharded collection 'Users" and I have another sharded collection "Items". Every item is having reference to one user.

How that will work with mongoose and populate? Is it even possible to work?
