on the page shown at https://docs.mongodb.org/manual/reference/database-references/ it says in a note
"The order of fields in the DBRef matters, and you must use the above sequence when using a DBRef".
Why is order important? I don't see the mongod server doing anything with DBRef's. The driver must resolve any references to other documents!

I've understood from David Golden that the server processes the bson byte array untill the command is found on the first location then the rest is handed over to some other part processing the rest of it..
