mod_pagespeed Failed to make directory - Permission denied - Error opening statistics errors in error.log

Hi,

I am using latest stable version of mod_pagespeed 1.7.30.4-3847. on an Apache 2.2.22 server

The error.log contains lots of error messages like these

Error msg1: Failed to make directory /var/cache/mod_pagespeed/prop_page: Permission denied

Error msg2: /var/cache/mod_pagespeed/prop_page/http.... opening temp file: No such file or directory

/var/log/pagespeed/stats_log_global:0: opening output file: Permission denied

Error msg3: Could not create directories for file /var/cache/mod_pagespeed/prop_page/

Error msg4: /var/log/pagespeed/stats_log_global:0: opening output file: Permission denied

Error msg5: Error opening statistics log file /var/log/pagespeed/stats_log_global.

How can I resolve these issues?

I think the easiest way it to use "sudo chown www-data make /var/cache_mod_pagespeed". Depending on what distro you have, "www-data" might not be the right user.

I think based on 945, the root cause of this has been found & fixed in our install scripts, and will be available when we release 1.9, but the "sudo chown" workaround should get you rolling.

Correction, Issue 945 is now fixed in our latest beta: 1.8.31.3. If you can upgrade to the latest beta, please let us know if this solves the permissions problem.

I have just switched to beta channel, and it shows me version number 1.8.31.2-3973 , and the permission issues still there.

I am on debian wheezy 7

"sudo apt-get remove mod-pagespeed-stable"

"sudo apt-get install mod-pagespeed-beta"

Get:1 http://dl.google.com/linux/mod-pagespeed/deb/ stable/main mod-pagespeed-beta i386 1.8.31.2-r3973 [5,397 kB]

I have to wait for 1.8.31.3 or where can I get / install the very latest version?

It's possible that the previous install left the directories created, and the upgrade did not alter them. Please go ahead and chown the directories per the apache requirements on your system (e.g. www-data on ubuntu/debian).

Yes, I forgot to tell in my previous post, that I already did "sudo chown www-data:www-data /var/cache/mod_pagespeed/" (after install 1.8.31.3 beta)

Unfortunately error meassages still there.

Just to make sure, are you running Ubuntu/Debian? I'm not 100% sure that "www-data" is the user running the "apache2" processes. Maybe it's something else. Also, why "www-data:www-data" and not just "www-data"?

Finally, you might have wanted:

sudo chown -R www-data var/cache/mod_pagespeed

Are you using one of those modules that changes user-ID (via su or something) for each request? Those can be a problem for shared file-based cache, but you could probably use memcached.
