Feasting in 2012/2013

Hello everyone!

We're nearing the end of the scheduled Manga Moveable Feasts. The Clamp Feast is going on right now and we have the Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service Feast to look forward to next month. I thought it would be a good idea to start thinking about future feasts. (I like to be able to plan ahead). Personally, I would be interested in hosting a Moyoco Anno Feast at Experiments in Manga.

I have made a few lists from the suggestions that were left on Kate's Future Manga Moveable Feasts? post to get our creative juices flowing. There are some really great ideas here!

Ed mentioned that Vertical would be interested in hosting a Gekiga/Garo Feast, possibly in November. Melinda also expressed interest in hosting a Boys' Love Feast sometime around December. Both of these Feasts will need to be confirmed. I've gone ahead and signed up Experiments in Manga for January, but that's certainly negotiable.

Here is a list of proposed Feasts. Please do not consider this official! It's simply a way to get us started thinking ahead.

I would like to host a general Shojo Beat Manga Moveable feast at whatever time is most convenient. Since I co-hosted recently, I'll let other people go first if they want to fill in with something else. But if we need to have something scheduled for September, I would propose a Shojo Beat feast then.

 

October sounds like a good month to focus on something spooky like Vampire Manga or Ghost Hunter Manga.

Hi all, 

I believe I've only participated in one MMF so far (sorry about that!), but here are some topics I'm particularly interested in:

Boys' love/Yaoi, Moyoco Anno, Ai Yazawa, vampire manga (love Anna's suggestion for vampire manga for October!)

I've never hosted before, but if that's not a problem I suppose I wouldn't mind hosting one month, provided that no one minds that my blog isn't 100% manga only. I'd volunteer for the vampire theme in October... but maybe co-hosting would be an option since I'm new? 

Anyways, just wanted to chime in and let everyone know I'm amazed at what a super job you all do every month! I hope I'll have something to contribute in our next round of themes.

Fresh blood -- no pun intended! -- would be most welcome; many of the most vocal participants in this forum have already hosted at least one or two "feasts." Adding new voices (and new sites, too) seems like one of the best ways to keep the MMF fresh, fun, and relevant. I'd love to see you host October's discussion, whether or not it focused on vampires.

I was very nervous the first time I hosted the Feast, but it was a great experience. (And here I am, signing up to do it again...) If you feel like you need help with the October Feast, I'm sure someone would be willing to help co-host. I think you'll do a great job, though. :)

A few comments:

First of all, I hope no one minds that I took charge of coordinating this round of scheduling. I don't mean to come across as pushy or controlling. If I did, I sincerely apologize. I'll leave the scheduling up to someone else for the next round. (Any volunteers?)

I would like to extend a special welcome and thank you to Anne and Justin for volunteering to host for the first time. I agree with Kate--it's wonderful to have newcomers participate and hope that even more will be willing to host in the future. Thank you to everyone else for volunteering as well!

Vertical is still interested in hosting a Feast, but November is too far in the future to confirm at this point. So, November's Feast is still down as a maybe. I think it's fine to schedule Vertical in at this point. If Vertical is unable to host in November, we can either take a month off or do some last minute scheduling. Other opinions? And how does everyone feel about proposed line-up?

I'd be interested in both topics, but am wondering how many Go Nagai titles are available in English. If memory serves, Kodansha published a bilingual edition of Devilman (OOP), and Studio Ironcat released Honey Cutie 90 (also OOP). I also think Marvel included a Nagai story in Epic magazine -- issue 8, maybe?

Bottom line: is there enough material in print that the barriers to participation would be low? If so, I'd totally contribute to a Nagai-themed MMF! If not, Kaori Yuki would be a great second choice.

I don't remember Kodansha releasing Devilman, but Glenn Danzig's company Verotik published 6 issues of it colorized for an American audience. That's looooong out of print, though, as is Cutie Honey. Virtually every animated incarnation of a Go Nagai story has been released in English, but the manga themselves have not.

Even Yuki Kaori could be a little difficult (outside of Grand Guignol Orchestra), as it looks like many of those VIZ volumes are also out of print, though I see you can get early volumes of Angel Sanctuary from some 3rd party Amazon vendors. Still, it would be more participant-friendly than Go Nagai.

Aside Angel Sanctuary, I believe that one does not need to actually buy her works to read them and participate in the feast. Almost everything of hers can be found scanlated at a decent quality.

Probably we need to mention here that the Feast is not tolerant of scanlations in general, so that's not something that should be suggested to participants as a means for acquiring series.

I think Yuki Kaori is a completely viable option if you (or someone else) would like to host. She has quite a few series that were published in English. Some may be out of print now, but I know that her many of her series tend to be popular at libraries. With enough heads up, people should be able to track down used copies or find copies to borrow if they would like to participate. (Heck, I volunteered to host a Moyoco Anno Feast, and I think the only work of hers that is currently in print is Sakuran...)

I would as well!  Participation could end up being kind of low, since quite a few of those volumes (particularly in the low 20s) are now difficult to get, but there is certainly an enthusiastic fan base among manga bloggers. I'd love to bring more attention to the series, and have more excuses to urge VIZ to do an omnibus (or digital) release.

In the past, we've tried to steer clear of authors whose work was out of print or not available in English. Are those criteria we want to stick with in planning future feasts? I think a Basara feast would be interesting, but might be difficult to pull off, given the scarcity of so many volumes. 

Perhaps we could find a way to broaden the topic so that more people could participate but interested parties could write about Basara. How would you feel about hosting a shojo fantasy MMF, Anna?

Katherine, your idea for extending the scope to shojo fantasy sounds great. I knew that I wanted to see a Tamura MMF (even if I wasn't hosting it!) and she's a good choice since Viz has published several of her titles.  I was thinking Chicago and Wild.com would be tricky to find, but I had no idea it was the same case with Basara.

If Tamura has several series that have been in print in English at some point, I don't see the problem with doing an MMF centered around her. Just my opinion, but I prefer the MMFs that are more laser-focused on a title or a creator than the more general genre-based ones, and while some volumes of Basara may be hard to find, I think enough of her work has been published that she's not so obscure that participants or readers wouldn't be able to find at least some of it used or in libraries.

My original suggestion was based on my experience hosting three MMFs: one focused on a series, one focused on an author, and one focused on a VIZ imprint. When the scope of the feast is narrow, participation tends be low. It's a lot of work to host a feast, and it can be really frustrating when only a few people contribute -- even if those contributions are great. The Tezuka feast worked because there's a tremendous amount of his writing available in English, both in and out of print, and many of those series are short. When volumes are scarcer, however, it makes it difficult for people to participate if they don't already own the books. 

It's great to shine a spotlight on artists who aren't as widely known among English-speaking readers, and I don't want to discourage that practice. But I also feel that we should try, whenever possible, to frame topics to encourage wide participation. Is there a way we can provide Basara fans a chance to discuss the series without excluding other folks?

If Shoujo fantasy as a category is has too much crossover with the Shojo Beat feast, what about something like "classic shoujo" or "80s-90s shoujo"?  There are a number of series in that category I'd personally love to Feast on, but so many of them are difficult to acquire these days, so I'd be hesitant to suggest any of them. But with a broader category, more people would be able to find *something*. 

I'm not opposed to a Basara feast, but I agree it can be really frustrating to put in the work of hosting the MMF only to have a few others join in.  I've been there. (*cough*Wild Adapter*cough*)

I notice that a lot in certain feasts with author's low avaliable of
works in English, and with time definitely it is a factor. We are a
mmf group, but I always find that if there is a flexibility or
allowanrce for variety in mediums for a title/body then it is a great
idea to try and put more awareness on just how great a title or author
is.

I'd just like to note that 16 of the first 17 volumes of Basara (all but Vol. 2) are available on Amazon right now for cover price or less, as is Wild Com, and 21 volumes of Basara (again, no vol. 2) plus Wild Com. and both volumes of Chicago are available at Right Stuf for 25% off cover. That sounds like more than enough of her work is easily available to justify a creator-centric MMF, not to mention the number of people on the list who are already fans.

 

I know the more general the feast the higher the participation level, but as a reader, I'm more prone to follow an MMF if it's more focused. If the host chooses a topic that he or she is passionate about and then translates that passion in their own posts, I'm then MUCH more likely to follow the links to other posts...the whole impulse of "That was interesting, I'd like to learn more about that!" that isn't there when you cast your net too widely. Also, I think having a single topic encourages more back and forth discussion than a series of "Well, this one is my favorite because..." posts, and leads to better posts in general.

 

I'm not saying the more generic feasts don't have their place, but I think we should use them more sparingly, and that when we have someone ready to host a more focused MMF, our first impulse shouldn't be to make it more generic just to increase the number of posts. Quantity's important, but I'd still take quality any day.

Ideally, a host will post a call for participation, an introduction article for your particular MMF, your entry in the MMF, the daily round ups, and a conclusion that points readers to the next MMF.
