I took a quick trip to ClearPlay's website. Sheesh. While I defend the
right for ClearPlay to continue selling their service -- which is what
it is, not copyright infringement -- I'm overwhelmed with the stupidity
of the concept.

Okay, we've got family "A" who won't watch a movie with swearing,
sexual innuendo or violence. So... why in the hell would they rent
"Con-Air," or "Coyote Ugly," or "Charly's Angels" (1 & 2), or "Lethal
Weapon," or...? And then some of the other movies they filter... "Dr.
Dolittle?" WTF? "Shrek?" "Snowdogs?" "Signs?" "Kangaroo Jack?" "Angels
in the Outfield?" "Angels in the FREAKIN' Outfield?" "Finding
Forrester?" GOOD GRIEF!

Sorry I even defended these idiots. This is just TOO damn stupid.

I hadn't heard of these people before tonight. I don't see them as a
any threat to Hollywood, but good grief, why would you edit down
"Finding Forrester?" Definitely would ruin the movie.

And, now, I suddenly get Neal's and Bill's point.

Was I naive, or what?

Here's a list ClearPlay's movies. While a few could have a couple
scenes snipped without really harming the movie, most either fall into
two categories -- either "Why Bother?" because if you filter all the
objectionable stuff, the movie is gone anyhow -- or, "WTF?" -- kid's or
family movies that don't *need* anything filtered out for family
viewing. How anal are these guys anyhow?

"While You Were Sleeping" made the list too. Real anal folks.

I'm guessing that it's a kind of slippery slope -- once you start snipping
a few words here and there out of a few movies, then you start thinking
about other words or scenes that might be "objectionable" to someone,
somewhere. So you snip some more. And then some more ...

Pretty soon it's a frenzy of snipping, with the list of snippable movies
growing by the minute.

"Well, they show a little bit of Minnie's cleavage here -- better cut it."

Well, if we're talking about Minnie Driver I can understand that. The
thought of her cleavage unleashes forces I am powerless to control.

I agree. If I don't want pottymouth in my movie, I won't get a movie
with pottymouth in it.

These people are defeating their own cause.

If a user can remove the "fucks" and be happy with the film, the
studio will be less likely to restrain the "fucks" in the first place.

What these services do it remove the threat of boycotts.

I'm telling you -- there's a market for the "Anti-Clear Play" -- one
that will go through all of Minnie's prior movies and accentuate her
cleavage -- nay, add full frontal nude scenes to every Minnie Driver
movie, featuring Minnie herself -- including, I may add -- the
animated Tarzan.

Now that's the kind of add-on program that the American viewing public
can definitely get behind.

Plus, the viewer will come with free gift certificates for beer and
cheese puffs.

I agree that if you cut all obscenities, sex and violence out of most current
films, there wouldn't be anything left but the credits.

However, you could also lighten the Torah, the New Testament and the Qu'ran
(sp) by several hundred pages if you cut all the sex and violence out of them!
So I don't think completely eradicating *all* hints of sexuality or violence
from mainstream movies is the way to go.

On the other hand, the worldview of devout Christians, Jews and Muslims is
basically left out of most of today's mainstream entertainment. That's too bad,
because that's a potential audience of millions of people.

It's so rare -- and refreshing -- to go to a good movie that doesn't cross the
line with obscenity, gratuitous sex and overly graphic violence. The ones that
come to mind are the "family" blockbusters like "Lord of the Rings," "Men in
Black," "Jurassic Park," etc. Usually sci-fi, fantasy and historical films --
like "The Last Samurai" -- fall into this category.

I'm not one of those people who wants to ban other people, who don't have the
beliefs, from making or watching explicit films. I *am* one of those people who
would appreciate a few more non-explicit films like "A Beautiful Mind,"
"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "The Others."

I think the only non-children's movie that was rated "G" in many years
was "The Rookie." It did very well and I, personally, liked the movie.

What I don't understand about ClearPlay is why in the world are they
messing with movies like "Angels in the Outfield," "Finding
Forrester," "Dr. Doolittle," or "While You Were Sleeping." If folks
find these films "disturbing" enough to need editing -- maybe they
shouldn't be watching movies at all.

The thing that upsets me about the sex and violence in most Hollywood
films is that it's bad sex and pointless violence.

I can't remember the last film I saw that dealt with the sex in the way
that everybody I know deals with it.

The two best scripts I've writen are very much about sex. You couldn't
make them without it (or cut it) and preserve the movie. Is it
gratuitous? Hell, no. Is it occasionally in your face and uncomfortable?

Hell, yes.

And if you have a problem with that, your problem isn't with the movie.
It's with the world.
