They're planning on banning everyone under 20. They've already deleted
my account, and all 1500 posts, even though I'm the one that made the
forum the way it is. They're also going to ban anyone who goes barely
off topic or talks about "hypothetical roads" and the forum will suck.

I'm not sure if you realize this, but aaroads.com is considered to be
the hallmark of roadgeeking websites. Think of aaroads.com as
basically the top of the tree, while every website afterwards can have
its roots traced to aaroads.com in some way, shape or form.
Certainly, it was aaroads.com that made me realize that I wasn't the
only one who had an interest in road infrastructure, and I'm sure
almost everyone on this newsgroup who's been around long enough would
concur.

Um, question...considering the fact that the forum is still in
maintenance mode, and no posts are being displayed to the public just
yet **how would you know?**

We're banning anyone under the age of 20? Guess I'm gonna have to ban
myself. Oh, wait, I can't do that, cause it would be silly.

Uh, one of the guys who is running the forum is under 20.

How is banning worse than saying "f-you, you're not allowed to unsubscribe" ?

Remember: you VOLUNTARILY gave your roadforum back to AA Roads.

Don't like it? Steal it back again.

Otherwise, quit acting like a spoiled child.

A number of us have stumbled onto the hobby via nycroads.com,
including myself. Some sites, such as Kurumi's site, and a number of
others, would also have their roots from around the same time frame,
over a decade ago. But certainly, AARoads has built a strong
credibility over the years as "one stop shopping" for all your roads
needs.

I don't know how the new edition of the forum will pan out, but what I
can say is let things work themselves out. Someone may be bitter, but
it's only the Internet.

Beg to differ.

I can only speak to cahighways.org, but my site has been around since the early
1990s, and goes back even earlier to posts on ca.driving back in the late 1980s.
It has always been completely independent from other websites.

As for aaroads, it showed up in the late 1990s, as a combination of the efforts
of Alex (on the east coast) and Andy. Now, I was less familiar with Alex's work,
but Andy had a parallel site to cahighways.org that focused on a specific subset
of California roads. Excellent work. Anyway, he and Alex merged their sites to
form the original aaroads content.

So, while I applaud the work of Alex and Andy as a group, we should also
acknowledge the excellent predecessor sites that went into it, their developers,
and the fact that there are a number of sites that are completely independent
efforts.

My first highway and transportation website started in 1997, and has
always been completely independent of others. That said, I certainly
recognize the efforts of all the other highway private websites that are
out there.

Scott Oglesby was the first inspiration for my websites, as before I
started mine, I was already contributing material to his 3-digit
Interstate website.

It's a continuous route, but it's not all signed as I-86. In some spots it's signed only as NY 17. But you can drive all the way from the Pennsylvania state line to the New York Thruway (I-87) on it.

So, I doubt one could drive across the state on route 86.

Depends what you mean by "clear across". If you mean from PA to the
Thruway near Harriman, yes you can, give or take the tiny bit that is
in Sayre PA and the part that isn't yet signed I-86 due to ongoing
upgrades to get rid of cross roads.

If you want to go east of the Thruway, you need to switch to another
road. The obvious thing to do would be to take I-84 from its
intersection with I-86, to the CT border.

Log Cabin Republicans aren't true conservatives. On fiscal issues they may hold conservative views, but on cultural issues they obviously don't.

I-86 (in this case the PA-NY I-86, not the ID one) is a split route currently (any parts of NY17 not signed with 86 is designated as future 86), but technically, no. Even though there is a gap in I-86 after the foray back into PA for Exit 60, technically you do not have to get off the Southern Tier Expressway that is NY-17 and I-86/Future I-86. Also; the future extension of 86 along with adding signage to the gap for the I-86 route can lead you to near the NY-DE border (if I'm correct).

I don't know about NY-86 though. I know about I-86/NY-17 but not that.

The censorship and overmoderation there is getting a bit old, especially when
moderators with personal animosity toward certain posters let those feelings
factor into their moderation decisions.

True indeed. But this newsgroup was destroyed by some supertrools back by 2010.
I still post on a few Usenet newsgroups via Google News interface (as I did
here).

The nice thing about usenet is that moderation is done by the client you
use. That is, you choose who to put in the killfile and which threads
or subthreads to kill. You don't have to leave it up to some moderator
to do it for you, or get stuck with the choices of some moderator who
disagrees with you.

It's too bad that practically everyone has moved to AARoads and doesn't
post here anymore.

Any trolls that were active back then are long gone. Maybe this group
could be revived ;)

So few people even have Usenet access these days, that it's not likely.

Google groups gives you access. There are also free text-only news
servers like eternal-september.org

Anyone who has a web browser and an internet connection has access to groups.

I never got a forum for my site because I wondered what would happen.
1and1.com dropped support for forums anyway. I did get spam emails from
other countries about making "millions" off my site so I figure that would
have gone onto a forum. My site is free so I wondered why they sent me
stuff like that. I prefer usenet and I hope google groups and other free
options are available.
