Black buck and me:Ph.D. sans Registration
“…Black Buck (Antilope cervicapra…”Kodiakkarai, Poit Calimere in English, the tip of the nose in the face like picture of Tamilnadu, in the Tanjore district off Vedaranyam, is a very interesting place to visit. The area has three distinct regions, the coastal open area with grass covered sands and puddles of water and perhaps the deceptive quick sands in them, the evergreen coastal forests and the open salty swamps and so are its inhabitants, I mean wildlife. (A better description of the area would be familiar to those of you who were fortunate to have read Kalki's famous 'Ponniyin Selvan')
The coastal glades are occupied by Black Buck (Antelope cervicapra) the Indian antelope, whose grace is unexcelled when you see it on the run. It will run at breakneck speed for some distance and then leap in the air for a height of about 8 feet, glide in the air and then land and continue its run. In the evergreen coastal forest you will come across spotted deer, jackals and some feral horses too apart from a variety of birds. The salt pans are very interesting for in the months of October to January you can see millions of shore birds of different varieties and also the large flamingos that paint the sky red when they fly because of the red colour on the underside of their wings.
Shore birds and waders will be foraging the swamps for food and suddenly one bird will take off with all the rest, in thousands joining it. In a jiffy all the birds will make an abrupt U-turn leaving one to wonder who guides them and who navigates them for you will not see a single bird flying in the original direction once the U-turn is taken or a single mid-air crash that knocks a bird down. The flamingos will bend their body and bury their heads underwater moving them right and left searching for food. They will go some distance like this for some time and then suddenly all of them will walk back. As they turn back, for a few seconds their heads will be up scanning the area for predators perhaps.
The entire area is a 'protected' (?) sanctuary. All the same, shooting goes off and on, by the rich influential meat hungry that are greedy after venison. Once in a while a nature lover would write a report about the dwindling population of the Black Buck and the Government would come out with a statement in the press that everything was fine in the sanctuary area. They would also immediately carry out a head count and say that there are over a thousand of the animal. In 1974, the Bombay Natural History Society counted only 270 of them. Immediately the forest department carried out a census and reported having counted 1500 animals. Their method of counting was, "We counted 15 animals in an area of about 40 acres and the sanctuary area is about 4000 acres and so the total number would be 1500"! (What about the areas where nothing was counted?) We at Wilcos laughed at this and decided to carry out a census. This we did in 1976. Our method of counting was the group of some two dozen volunteers broken up into smaller groups of about four or five, separated at a distance of about a kilometre and counting only the animals that were to the right of them while walking from the sea shore to the thick coastal forests. Our count was 340. In this method we covered the entire coastal plain. Again in 1977 we carried out a census and counted 541 bucks. We decided that we would publish our findings as a paper in the Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society.
I drafted the report as a 'paper' and added the name of one Paul Sunder raj, a professor in Botany at the EVR College who was one of the volunteers, as a co-author, so as to 'give some credence'. I gave the draft to Paul with a request to whet it for I thought being a professor in a college he would know better as to how a paper for publication in a journal should be written. He kept it with him for nearly a month and then returned it to me saying it is perfect and needs no corrections. I sent a fair copy to BNHS and a reply came from them, "We shall shortly let you know our decision". Again after a week a second letter came thus-"We have received an identical report from one Dr.Shah of Gujarat University and Paul Sunder raj of Tiruchy. Please discuss amongst yourselves and decide and let us know as to whose paper should be published". Shocked, we called Paul to an urgent special meeting of the managing committee where every member was after Paul's blood for plagiarism. He fell at our feet and cried, "I have registered for my PhD under Dr.Shah and please don't get my registration cancelled'. As a via media we made him write a letter to Dr.Shah asking him to forward it with his footnote concurring with its contents to BNHS. Paul's letter, dictated by us ran some what like this: "The Operation Black Buck census was conceived and executed by K.N.Natarajan, founder secretary of the wildlife conservation society of Tiruchy and as such his name should appear as the senior author". Dr.Shah had no other go but to oblige lest his name is dragged in a plagiarism case.
The article was published in the Journal of the BNHS with my name as the senior author.
A week later I received a letter from Dr.Shah that read, "Dear Dr. Natrajan, I hear that there is a black buck sanctuary somewhere in Gujarat. Have you any details with you about it?" Thus I received a doctorate without my registering for it!
The vain man he was. It would be beneath his dignity (?) to correspond with anyone less than a Ph.D.!!!
I had the letter with me till about ten months back when we went to USA leaving a tenant to take care of the house. Perhaps the 'tenant' took this piece of paper for rolling one of the brass lamps he stole along with other brass items in the house, for I just couldn't find it when I needed it for showing to Prasad in December last.
