The celebrated Veena Vidwan, the late S Balachander, once got into a
public spat with 'The HINDU'. Tempers got frayed. In the ensuing
melee, he
characterized 'The HINDU' for all time to come as "a spineless paper
whose editor is a boneless wonder". Veena Balachander was a versatile
genius. More about him some other time however.

It's been a long time. Much water has flown under the Basin Bridge.
But 'The HINDU' has remained the same. Its editor has remained the
same, in spirit, at least. Until a couple days back. Is the
impossible
actually possible? Is The HINDU now growing a backbone? Does modern
science support it?

The HINDU has published a column now which actually says Shri Rajiv
Gandhi is culpable for the 1984 anti Sikh riots and names him and
Public Enemy #1, Shri N Modi in the same breath. In fact the writer
thinks Rajiv-ji should also have been hauled up in front of a special
panel. Toba toba.

But how did things come to such a pass? Is it possible that N Ram is
not scared of Amma? Is it possible that N Ram is not scared of
anybody or his Amma? Is it possible that this year Good Friday is
falling on a Saturday? Maybe Shri P Chidambaram is no longer
confident
of dodging flying footwear and N Ram decided to lend a helping hand,
of his own free will (that means without consulting the Head Jamadar
in the Chinese embassy in New Delhi)? May be ...

Is it possible that all this is merely the product of a fevered
imagination while The HINDU continues to be delightfully
invertebrate?
That would indeed be reassuring in our world full of uncertainties.

Sir,
It would be most interesting and be serving a large no. of newspaper readers if all "the rejected letters to the "Editor-in-Chief" of the Hindu written by those who do not fall in line with Sir Ram are compiled daily and published as a separate blog.  Some retired media person who has ample time at his disposal may undertake this.  This is only a suggestion because many of the readers of the Hindu are frustrated and vexed with the letters which are selectively published and that too in a truncated fashion.
