Hi Friends,

I have just installed the latest version on Minix OS ie Minix 3.3.0 on my pc on a hard drive, which has only Minix OS on it. Hard drive size is 80 GB, in good working condition, only 1-2 yrs old. But I am not able to install X11 GUI. I used the command - pkgin install x11 - Do I have to mention the latest version of X11 as well in the command or just x11 will do? Is there any other GUI for Minix out there? I have tried to update the system immediately after installation by typing the command as root - pkgin update -. Please help me out, I want to learn and teach some of my friends the use of Minix. Thanks a lot.

"Note: On the current mainline (soon-to-be MINIX 3.3.0) X11 has not yet been updated, and thus is not yet available."

Hi James,

X11 is available only (comes preinstalled) on the latest developer snapshot -see download section. For further details related to X11 stuff carry out some search in this group.

Oh no, this is really very disappointing for me. So how long will it take for X11 to be available for 3.3.0? Thanks

Over two years and still no development?  Is this project dead?

The Minix 3.4 snapshot mentioned by r0ller worked well for me, and included X11 (Xorg)
This is with "FVWM",... but yes there are other window managers available,...

Could you give me some details on how do you configure the system and X11? I'm planning to use VMware Fusion and virtualbox.

Thanks

Sorry about the slow reply,
Actually I didn't really do anything special in configuring,
I had trouble as well with the Minix 3.3.0  and could not get X11 working, I looked at the wiki, about that but still had problems,
so I asked here, and the same was suggested to me, to use the more recent snapshot.

That worked fine.  It was using TWM as the default WM, and I installed
FVWM,...
It should be noted, I am not at all very advanced, I pretty much need to stick with things that "just work",..so I didn't do anything with configurations beyond
installing FVWM, and ImageMagick, also installed "pico" editor, I had problems with "nano" freezing, and it seems it worked better with Pico.
Minix3 is installed on a VirtualBox VM,  I have not tried, nor ever used "Vmware". The host system is Debian 7.
I also installed the Links browser, I tried to install Dillo, but could not get it working.
Unfortunately I, all though I can connect to other sites, forums with
"links" and "lynx", this "google grouops" does not support those browsers,..but that would be another topic.
