I need a bearing with a 12mm bore for a project I'm working on.  Ideally I would like a pillow block, but for now can use anything.

I have ordered some pillow blocks but they won't be here for another week and I'm chomping at the bit to get making.

Could we make a "fake" bearing for now? Maybe using some HDPE milled to the size you need? HDPE is fairly low-friction...

The junk box(s) revealed one, but only one... are you there now?
No idea what I took this out of...

Interesting idea Pete, but it needs to handle some serious tension and HDPE is listed as poor tensile strength.

Delrin has twice the tensile strenght, but I'm not sure it will take repeated pulls across the axle.

Nylon is even better and you can get an oil impregnated version:  https://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-plastic-sheets/=15n4iuf

Got me thinking.

I left a nice sealed bearing in my storage area. (GD208 rack by the portable steps near Willys boat) Look in the mold box. Also, there seem to be some in a drawer denoted bearings by the bolt rack near the drills on the wall across from the machine shop area...  they vary in quality. I think you could knock out a pillow block in short area using machine shop assets.

I was going to suggest Delrin, but I don't have large piles of scrap Delrin in the shop. ;)

Thanks Rocky, found the bearning and its the right size, too bad the shaft is a lead screw and was cut a little under.  I may need to add a shim but I'll play around and see what work.

Usual repair techniques involve knurling or shrink fit sleeves...

Keep in mind that a typical ball bearing is only designed for radial loads, like a wheel barrow. For axial loads, loads pushing or pulling the axel "through" the bearing, you have to use a tapered roller bearing. For axial loads in two directions, push pull, you need to place 2 tapered roller bearings opposite of each other.

Thanks Rocky, I got stalled working on it last week and now got my pillow block bearings so I'll put yours back on your shelf.
