I am considering signing up for Adobe CC so I can use Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat. $50 per month seems reasonable to me, anyone out there have any opinions, positive or negative?-MattN

I despise the idea of 'renting' software as well, but my
understanding was that Adobe had eliminated 'retail' copies
altogether and that paying a monthly fee is now the only option of
you didn't already have a 'boxed copy'. Someone correct me if I'm
wrong?
Eh, if GIMP can't do it, I don't need it.

Generally I'm against the idea of "renting" software. I've had a license for Adobe Photoshop for about 72 months now and originally paid about $500. If I had been renting the entire time, I'd have paid $3,600+ by now. That said, if you really love/require having the new features with each release, renting is useful. And of course you also get access to all the other Adobe applications as well. If you can justify it by billing clients, etc. go for it.

I use Adobe for both a church and a non-profit org. Since you are not remarketing the Adobe products themselves there is no issue with either Adobe or the IRS. Also non-profits can make a profit!!!! The restriction as far as the IRS is concerned comes from how that profit is handled.
Adobe also has a student/educator discount which is about half of the regular rate.
Keep in mind that your subscription rate vs one time cost should also include regular upgrade pricing. The real value of the subscription plan is access to ALL of their products (literally thousands of dollars if you spec out all of the premium versions) as well as constant updates of new features. And adobe is turning out quite a few!
Cash.
Yeah, I'd definitely recommend against violating any software licenses.
(I'm going to assume it does allow commercial use, but I think it's worth confirming.)

Adobe doesn't care, the IRS does. The 501(c)(3) status could be in jeopardy if used improperly.

Adobe has a special license for non profit bodies such as the Makerspace for $330 per year. If you could get members to donate the cash I could talk to the board about licensing the entire suite.
