I know we usually order from WoodCraft.  (but the prices have been increasing and increasing where its now $2.00 a sheet)

I have never tried Kettle Moraine Woods over by 7 mile rd.  (anyone have any experience?)   I'm curious on getting the smaller sheets (not a huge 8x4 sheet)...  prices/quality?

I just placed an order on Amazon for 40pc 3mm 12x12 baltic birch ply sheets here:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GQND2PK/

$50.00 is not too bad. ($1.25 ea.)  (but add another $5.00 shipping as it doesnt ship from Amazon directly) so more like $1.375 ea. to be fair..  (still cheaper then what we have been getting)

I like to keep stock on hand but $2.00 a pop makes me cringe.

Figured I'd share and see if anyone else has a 'spot'.

Thanks!

-Jerry

Pretty sure that $2/sheet of 12x12 3mm is the "going rate" for them AT the Makerspace.. I know I've bought plenty of sheets from other members at that price.

I stock up on larger pieces when on sale and cut them myself.

Kettle Moraine Hardwood sell 1/8 inch 5 by 5 ft Baltic Birch for $20.00 plus tax.
What I have them do is cut the board 2 ft by 5 ft and the remainder is about 3 ft by 5 ft.

It will then fit  in my van

I was selling them for $2/sheet 12"x12" 3mm a while back. The price (with shipping) was just a bit under that, so I rounded up to $2 to make it easy to do math.

Josh from Brown Dog Gadgets gets his wood at Kettle Moraine Hardwoods and has them cut it down to fit in his 3'x2' laser cutter. (I think he uses more 1/4" than 1/8" though.)

I've got 1/4" from Bliffert Lumber on Morgan Avenue, but I don't think they carry 1/4" sheets.

I've been told you can order online from Woodcraft and they will ship it to the local store for free, you just have to go pick it up. (I've never done this, but I've been told it's an option from other members.)

Here's the link to the sheets I used to get:

 http://www.woodcraft.com/product/131138/baltic-birch-plywood-3mm18-x-12-x-12.aspx

JM, let us know how the quality of the Amazon order is. I know with Woodcraft we'd get a few warped sheets on occasion, but overall the quality was good.

Thanks all..

couple things:

as mentioned, getting larger sheets is of no interest for me..(no easy way to get it into 12x12 or 12x21 sheets) hence why the point was posted.

The sheets at Woodcraft are $1.99  so ($2.00) directly from woodcraft, not sold that way AT the space.  (maybe  before when they were like $1.49.. but the price has changed)

I too have been more or less happy with the stuff from woodcraft.  a few warped peices as mentioned.. and a few 'knots' from time to time..  but overall decent.

I'm hoping this will be at least equal quality.

I'll report and let you guys know how it goes.

I have some 3mm ply from a Dalek benefactor which proved unusable for the large skirt segments. (too flexible) They are cut into odd Dalek-y shapes... so, will likely be needing a trim to comply with user requirements. I will put them in the laser area upon my next visit to the space. (Tuesday or sooner)

Just stopped by Kettle Moraine and got quotes for you.

12"x30" = $3.70
16"x30 = $4.93
5'x5' = $20.00

First cut is free after that it is $0.15 - $0.18 per linear foot.

Cashius, for some reason I thought they told me they were unable to cut the 5' piece down because it was to big. I might be totally wrong but I would call and verify first.

Unless they have changed their rules that  is not true.  I have had them cut the board  at 2 ft by 5 ft and placed both pieces in my van.
I have not done this for about a year, but that's how I use to do it at Kettle Marine on 7 mile Road.

With Steve comments, I would also call, just in case.

I believe that is still more expensive then the 'Amazon' link?

you only get 2.5 '12 in. sheets' from the 12x30 product..

The 5x5 sheet might be a good deal though?

you 25 total '12 in. sheets' from it..

16 'cuts'  at roughly $2.40 so $22.40 for 25 pieces!..   thats a good deal!  (cheaper since first cut if free!)

Was this the one by 7 mile road?

I got the wood from Amazon..

Review:

first look.. its 'lighter' in color from the pieces we get from Woodcraft.

(feels a bit lighter too?  maybes its in my mind!)

there are definitely some 'black marks' and 'knots' in them..  but so far with the exception of 1-2 pieces.. and least 1 side has been clean/perfect.

I have NOT tried to cut or etch anything in them yet.. so cant comment on the layers and/or glue to see if its an issue.

If I can get the price down to $1.00 per 12"x"12 sheet of 1/8 baltic birch would anyone want to order any? I would also be able to bring it in this coming week.

Let me know if anyone would like to order any and how much you would like to order.

sourced from where?

I noticed the difference between the Amazon wood I got and the Woodcraft wood we usually get...

woodcraft wood is a little more 'orange'.. where as the Amazon stuff is a bit 'lighter/whiter'.  when engraving, the Amazon stuff have a darker, more brown look, and again the engraved Woodcraft stuff has a more orange engraved results..
