The laser cutter is currently down until further notice due to an accident Friday 5/13/2016. An extra thick (1/2") piece of foamboard was being cut at very high power when it caught on fire. The fire was quickly extinguished, but there has been damage to the belts, tubes, the red dot/wiring, the carriage and possibly the lens tube. At this time there is no estimated time when repairs will be complete.

Please note: when it is back up, everyone wishing to use it will need to be re-checked out on its operation by a board member. (currently Claudio Donndelinger, Justin Ragsdale, Cliff Gurlen, Ernest McCracken, and myself). Additionally, The "Approved Materials List" on the wiki is NOT a guideline. If you want to use something not on that list, you MUST provide a sample to a board member to be tested. If approved, it will be added to the list.

We apologize for the inconvenience and are working to have service restored as soon as possible.

I disagree with the re-certification demand. Unless there is major operational changes to the laser cutter result from the repair, then the board should respect the time members have put in to a class. I have put in 100+ hours spent using the cutter with out incident. I take offence that one user can and has revokes all our credentials. Revoke the users, let them re-certify. I spent my vacation two weeks ago working on some game templates (30+ hours) that now have TBA date before I'll be able to complete them.

Anyway, I'll throw in $200 to the repair fund. Have Cliff contact me, we also have some other funds that could be re-purposed.

Thanks,

-Dru

Thank you for your input. Your level of experience with this device is an asset to the space.

The incident is not an isolated issue, but systemic. Training is needed to implement a lasting corrective action. Your (and other members reading this) thoughts to the review process is welcome as well, as it is finalized at the next board meeting.

Respectfully,

Justin Ragsdale
VP

Thanks Justin,

Danny sent a PM, and clarified what would be expected and I don't disagree. Sent some money to get things rolling, don't have much but it's the groups. If I or any members can assist further, please let us know.

Thanks again

Just to give everyone an update. Laser cutter is on its way to making a full recovery. Cliff and I dissembled part of the unit last night, cleaned it, and got replacement parts on order. Unfortunately replacement parts had to be ordered from china. We are looking at 2-4 weeks for shipping and 1-2 days to get it realigned and operational. Damage to the machine was minimal and cost was pretty low for parts. For any questions, concerns or feedback please email bo...@midsouthmakers.org.

Don't sweat it.

I just hope you learned what not to do...

If they repairs comes out cheap, I hope we'll have enough funds left over for a spare set or two.

I appreciate the time Danny, Ben, and Cliff has given towards the repairs. Thanks Guys!
