I just got my 360 today and I am trying to setup the extender side of this
with my MCE PC and I can not get it to work. I download the extender
software on my PC and it installs from www.xbox.com/pcsetup. It installs
fine and gets to the point where it wants the 8 digit key that the 360
provides. I put that in and when it goes to verify it says "XBox 360 Not
Found An Xbox 360 cannot be found on your network. Your Network connection
or a firewall may cause this problem. Check your connection or disable your
firewall and then select Next". I had a firewall running and thought that
was the problem. It was the OneCare firewall. I looked on the net for all
the ports that needed opened and I opened them. I then tried again with no
luck. I even uninstalled the OneCare and it still gives me the same
problem. I even disabled the Windows Firewall as well. I am stumped at
this point. I have all the windows updates
including the Rollups that were released. I have a regular XBox that I had
set up this same way and it worked no problem. Someone told me MCE 2002
will not work. I am pretty positive I am running 2005, but if I go to my
System it shows it as Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002 Service
Pack 2. If I am really running 2002 I have a hard time believing this would
not work. My Xbox is connected into my Netgear router do I need to open
ports on it? I wouldn't think so.

Please any help would be great. The XBox 360 support team is clueless on
this this stuff.

Thanks

And another thing. From my PC I can't ping the 360. Not sure if I am
suppose to be able to or not. I would think you should.

One other note. Both the 360 and my MCE are wired to the network. Also I
can connect to Xbox Live just fine.

You're seeing the operating system (Windows XP Pro) specifics, Scott. Open
MCE, go to Settings/General/About Media Center/Software Version, and you
should be seeing "Windows Media Center Edition 2005" in the information.

There is a known problem of conflict between OneCare and Media Center
Edition functionality. I would uninstall it until such time as Microsoft
works out the issues. Make sure your MCE machine has .NET Framework 1.1 and
.NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 installed in Add or Remove Programs. Make
sure "show updates" is checked at the top of the Add or Remove Program
listing.

I'd suggest backing out of what you have attempted thus far, then use this
information from the Xbox web site . . .
1.. Click the “Start” button on your Desktop
2.. Click “Control Panel”
3.. Click “Administrative Tools”
4.. Click “Services”
5.. Scroll down to “Fast User Switching”
6.. Right click on it, and select “Properties”
7.. If it is not set to “Automatic” start, change the startup type to
“Automatic”
8.. If the service is not started, click “Start”
9.. Close the “Services” window, and any windows opened while using it
10.. Click the back button on the top left of the screen
11.. Select “User Accounts”
12.. Select “Change the way users log on and off”
13.. Ensure “Fast User Switching is enabled”
14.. Close any windows you opened while following steps 1 through 13
15.. Go to http://www.xbox.com/en-us/pcsetup/redirect.aspx to determine
which download you need.
16.. If the page was able to determine the update you need click “Next”,
otherwise skip to step 6
17.. Click “Save”
18.. Click “Browse”
19.. Select your Desktop
20.. Wait until the file is done downloading, then go to step 10
21.. Access the Add or Remove Programs men
22.. Scroll down until all the way until you see “Windows XP Media Center
Edition 2005”
23.. If you see “Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005”
download the smaller version:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/8/5/28521E1E-120E-4D05-8310-3E43F2734431/XboxMCELite-ENU.exe
otherwise chose the full version here:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/8/5/28521E1E-120E-4D05-8310-3E43F2734431/XboxMCEFull-ENU.exe.
24.. Turn on your Xbox 360 without a disc in the drive, or by using the
eject button adjacent to the DVD tray and ensure it is on the first tab of
the Xbox 360 dashboard
25.. Go to the “Media” tab, and select “Media Center”
26.. Double click the setup icon for the installer version you downloaded
27.. Wait for the files to finish extracting
28.. Click “Next” (note you can use the Alt-Tab key combination on your
keyboard to navigate between the installer and this FAQ)
29.. Choose whether or not to accept or decline the agreement, you will
not be able to continue if you decline
30.. Click “Next”
31.. The installer will go through an assortment of installation status
screens, when it displays “Settings” along with a message below it, click
“Next”
32.. The screen will display a status screen, once that has passed click
“Next”
33.. On your Xbox 360, press the “A” button on your controller while
selecting the “Media Center” icon
34.. If you are prompted about a slow Network Connection select “Continue”
and press the “A” button on your controller, and although this error may
just seem like an annoyance it is correct. You may want to consider
upgrading to an 802.11a network.
35.. Enter the setup key displayed on the Xbox 360 into the corresponding
boxes on the Xbox 360 Media Center Extender setup screen, and click “Next”
36.. On your Xbox 360, promptly press “Continue” after the previous step
37.. Both the Xbox 360, and the Xbox 360 Media Center Extender Setup
screens will display status screens, once these pass your Xbox 360 should
connect to your Media Center PC
38.. Click “Next” after the status screen
39.. Setup will now setup shared folders for Windows Media Connect, you
can click “Find Music Later” and click “Next” should you choose not to wait
40.. Setup will now take you through a network performance tuner, follow
the step-by-step instructions on-screen
41.. Once the network performance tuner is finished, click “Finish” or the
“More Suggestions” button if you would like to learn more about improving
your network performance
42.. Click “Ok”, which will restart your computer
43.. If you have specific folders you would like to make available to the
Xbox 360 continue, otherwise omit the rest of this section
44.. Startup your computer, and logon if you haven’t done so already
45.. Click the “Start” button on your Desktop
46.. Hover over “All Programs”, and go to “Windows Media Connect”
47.. Click the “Sharing” button
48.. Click “Add”
49.. Click “Browse” and choose the folder you would like to share
50.. Enter a name to describe the folder
51.. Choose if you would like to make the media available to only the Xbox
360, specific other devices, or all devices on your home network
52.. Repeat steps 48 through 51 for each folder you would like to add

Chris,

Wow that was a long email. Well I figured out what the problem was. What
pain, because it was staring me right in the face. Well not really. When I
installed OneCare I had to open certain ports for my original XBox to work.
I had that running. Well for some reason those same ports must be different
for the 360. So I uninstalled the OneCare and it then enabled the Windows
Firewall. Well I disabled that as well, but I still could not get it to
work. I think was looking at my Local Area Connection Properties and I
clicked the Advanced Tab. Here the ICF was turned on and that must be what
was blocking the communication. As soon as I turned that off and retried
the setup bang it worked. Man an I happy now!

Thanks for your help and I hope this helps others out who are experiecning
these types of problems.!!

Scott, I would highly recommend turning the Windows Firewall back on for
your protection. Here's a Microsoft Knowledge Base article which may guide
you to solve the ports issue: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911728
Personally, I haven't altered any ports at all on my Xbox 360, and have full
connectivity with my Media Center Edition computer and Xbox Live!

Chris,

I reinstalled OneCare and everything is working great. One other problem
that I am seeing with my 360 that I did not see with my Xbox as a extender
is when i watch TV, movies, Pictures, and recorded TV none of them are
playing in Full Screen like the old XBox did. Everything is in Letter Box.
In my console setting I have it set to Widescreen and 480p. What could be
wrong here?

I ave a 57" Widescreen and I hate seeing the black bars on the sides of my
picture. Hopefully there is an answer for this.

Thanks

I believe what you're seeing is the settings on your TV or the Xbox 360.
Check in the Dashboard to see what you've selected for the display. I know
I've got various choices in the 360, as well as probably 14 different
settings on my TV for display modes. Also, make sure you've got the latest
updates for Media Center Edition installed. There are a couple released in
the last week (bottom two items):
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/results.aspx?pocId=38DF6AB1-13D4-409C-966D-CBE61F040027&freetext=Media%20Center%20Edition&DisplayLang=en
If you continue to have issues, I would suggest posting to the
microsoft.public.windows.mediacenter newsgroup where MCE functionalities are
supported.

Yes I check the dashboard settings and I know it has nothing to do with my
TV, becuase I had the old Xbox hooked to it this same way and it played
everything full screen. So it is either a limitation of the 360 or I am
missing something in the setup process.

Hi Chris, I am hopeing you can help me out like you did Scott. My
problem seems to be nearly identical to Scott's, except I didn't use
the onecare firewall. I have an original XBox that connects to my
Media Center fine, just like Scott. However, he turned off ICF to fix
his problem, when I go to the advanced tab on Local Area Connection
Properties I don't see and ICF option. The only item on the screen is
the Windows Firewall section with the setting button. I have the
firewall temporarily turned off by the way. I followed your lengthy
instructions above, but ended at the same place with the MCE PC
reporting that the XBox 360 could not be contacted. At step 16 you say
if it cannot determine what patch to install go to Step 6. Well for me
it reports I am ready to go, I assume this means no patch needed. So I
continued to the next step.

I have been spent countless hours searching the net, and talking to the
nice folks at XBox support, but don't seem to be getting anywhere. The
last guy I spoke to told me that becuase my the system properties page
of My computer reports XP Media Center Edition 2002, that it is not
supported. In side of Media Center software the setting tell me it is
2005. I have read elsewhere on the net that system properites always
reports 2002, that it is the base OS version for all Media Centers. Is
this true?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Donovan

Yes, System Properties, because it is looking at the operating system
(Windows XP Pro) will report that correctly. You need to go into Media
Center itself, since that's the superset operating on top of XP, then to
Settings/General/About Media Center. Then look at Software Version, which
should report "Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005." 8-)

Now, about your system and the problem of not connecting: Are you running
anything Norton (Symantec) or something like ZoneAlarm on the system?

Are you still having the problems? Let me know I would love to help you
out. I know how it is when this doesn't work quiet right. I spent 8 hours
trying to get this to work right. Once it worked it was great!
Unfortunately though I took my 360 back the other day, becasue I was not
happy with the only game I play on the system and that was Madden '06. I am
going to wait till July to get a 360 and hopefully the price will have come
down and Madden '07 will be much better.

Let me know!

I am having the exact same problem. I'm running the windows firewall, media
center 2005, have all the updates, etc. I did get my 360 to connect but it
was unexpected. After trying to connect over and over, I gave up and about 2
minutes later I heard the Media Center "welcome sound" that plays when you
open the main menu and sure enough it was running on my tv with the 360.
However, whenever I exit Media Center and try to connect again, I have the
same issue (can't find computer) and have the option to "try again". If I
just let the page sit there for a couple minutes, Media Center finally opens.
This should not be so troublesome. The XBox Live connects fine right away.
When I run the various network tests on the 360 everything is fine except the
message on computer reads "failed" (like the first post in this thread). I'm
going to give it about 12 hours to get a fix for this and if there is none,
I'm just going to return my 360 and wait until later in the year to buy one
like Scott mentioned he was doing. This is extremely frustrating and appears
to be a common issue with the 360's.

Any help or answers that you can give me is GREATLY appreciated.

One final note, I don't know if Windows Media Connect is supposed to be
turned on or not, but I am unable to enable it in the "services" area of
control panel. However, if I open up Windows Media Connect in the control
panel, it does show the 360 in there and has a green "allowed" by it. I
tried to just go into the Media area of the 360 and instead of selecting
Media Center I selected Music and choose stream from Computer and it failed
because it couldn't see the computer either.

I have one Media Center PC connected to a LinkSys router. My cable internet
connection is connected to the router, as is an ethernet cable to my 360.
I'm only running the Windows Firewall.

I read a post in one of the forums that I needed to run the network wizard
on my pc and setup a home network. I did that. It also said that I should
uninstall Media Connect and reinstall it afterwards and then everything would
work fine. I did that and still the 360 does not find the computer. Yet if
I select Media Center on the XBox and get the cannot find computer message
and just wait for awhile, Media Center opens up on my TV that the 360 is
connected to. In the "Services" area of control panel however, it won't
allow me to enable Media Connect. I receive the following message:

Could not start the Windows Media Connect Service service on Local Computer.
Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

As I indicated earlier, if I go into the Windows Media Connect area of
Control Panel, the XBox 360 is listed as one of my devices and says "Allowed"
in green underneath it.

I've put in at least 8 hours of troubleshooting on this and it's really
getting irritating. I hope that you can provide me with a solution.

Thanks,

Thanks, Bob. A simplistic question while I'm digging - What are the IP
addresses of the Media Center Edition computer and the Xbox 360. For
example, the MCE may be 192.168.1.1 and the Xbox 360 192.168.1.5, both with
a 255.255.255.0 subnet mask. Are you on Xbox Live! and that is working
properly? I'm doing some more research, and will post more in a bit.

Okay, Bob, since we seem to be having an issue with the Media Center Edition
behaving properly (since we know the Xbox 360 is good to go with the
networking), follow these instructions (from a Microsoft Knowledge Base
article) to assure the MCE will be properly reacting:
=====
1. Click Start, and then click Help and Support.
2. Under Pick a Task, click Use Tools to view your computer
information and diagnose problems.
3. In the Tools area, click System Configuration Utility.
4. In the right pane, click Open System Configuration Utility. This
opens the System Configuration Utility.
5. Click the Services tab.
6. Make sure all the following services are turned on. To turn on a
service, click to select the check box. • Application Layer Gateway Service
• Network Connections
• Network Location Awareness (NLA)
• Plug and Play
• Remote Access Auto Connection Manager
• Remote Access Connection Manager
• Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
• Telephony

=====
If anything is amiss in this area, it could be breaking the connection from
the Xbox 360 as you've seen.

I'm working on it, Bob. I know you're frustrated with this situation, but
I'm just a user like you are and am using my Sunday morning to try helping
you. Since I don't have your machine on my desktop and don't know what the
exact setup is, I'm trying to eliminate possible problem areas.

On your router, you do have the latest firmware installed, correct? One of
the things bothering me is why you can't turn on Fast User Switching. You
said earlier, I believe, that it is grayed out? You are NOT connected to a

See if this step-by-step information on FUS will help the situation:

I figured out the problem. The Universal Plug & Play service was disabled.
I enabled it and now the 360 is seeing my pc and my Media Center perfectly.
Thank you for all of your help. What I did was went to the error log and
looked at the log for the error generated when Windows Media Connect failed
to enable. It mentioned it being dependent on UPnP and so I looked in the
list of services for that and it showed disabled. Do I want the setting for
this to be "manual" and then click on "enable" (which is what I did), or
should I set it at "automatic"?

Good deal! Glad you got it figured out. My MCE machines are both set to
Manual, and once you do Start it'll remain, Bob. I haven't touched that
setting in probably more than a year, through upgrades, etc., and it hasn't
changed. If it is working, don't mess with it. 8-) Enjoy!

Chris,

After I restarted my pc, now Media Center isn't connecting to the 360. I do
the test network settings in the administration area of the 360 and
everything is fine. I can still connect to my pc via the music and video
selections and UPnP and Windows Media Connect are both active.

When I'm at the 360 and click on Media Center, it comes up with the
standarding "finding Media Center PC" (or whatever that message is) briefly
and then says "unable to find", and I'm given the option to "try again". I
click that and the same thing. It worked perfect until I rebooted. Any
ideas as to what is causing this?

Do you think that I should uninstall Media Connect and Media Extendter from
my Add/Remove Programs and then reinstall the entire package? I can remove
the pc from the 360 and start from scratch if you think that will help.

I think that might be a good idea. Clean all the connection stuff off each
unit (computer and Xbox 360) and then shut down the 360. Make sure you've
got the proper settings on the MCE machine, then reboot that. Go to the 360
and fire it up, then go through the procedure clean. (Bummer! 8-) )

Chris, here's what I did and the results (which by the way are same as my
last post):

I uninstalled Media Connect, and Media Center Extender from my pc. I
restarted my pc. I then went to the XBox and removed the computer and the
media center from the settings. At my pc, I reinstalled the 360 software
that has media connect and the extender in it. I got to the point where it
said to go to the 360 and click on Media Center and get the 8 digit code
before clicking continue. I got the code on the xbox and clicked continue
on the xbox. I then went to my pc and click next and entered the 8 digit
code and clicked next. It said "connecting to xbox and then said verifying
code. It then said it was unable to verify the code (it did this the very
first time I installed the software too). One of the buttons said "back" so
I clicked on that which took me back to the page on the pc where you enter
the code (I left the same one in that I just entered) and I clicked on next.
It did the same thing (unable to connect to xbox). I clicked on "back" and
repeated the procedure and it worked fine. It then went through adding my
media, checking the network compatibility (successful), etc. While it was
doing this stuff on my pc I heard Media Center open up on my tv with the
XBox. After everything was completed, I closed Media Center from the Xbox
and then went to "music" and it found my pc with now problem and had my
music listed (same thing with "pictures"). I went to the Media Center
button and clicked on it and received the same unable to connect to media
center message with the "retry" button. I clicked "retry" and received the
same message.

I left it on that screen and came in to my pc to type you this message.
After about 1.5 minutes or so I heard the Media Center open up on my Xbox.
It's like it's taking forever to open it and has to sit for a long time on
the failed screen before it successfully connects. What could be causing
this do you think?

BOB C.

P.S. I checked Media Connected and UPnP in the services and both are
running perfectly. I opened up Media Connect and the XBox 360 is in my
device list. ?????????

Bob, I'm pretty sure everything is being done right on your end. What type
of Linksys router do you have, and what firmware is it running? I almost
think it might be better for you to post directly to the
microsoft.public.windows.mediacenter newsgroup with details of everything
we've gone through so the guys at Microsoft who monitor that newsgroup can
have a shot at it.
