I am stuck.

I am using an Avery type 5267 mailing label.

I need to make labels in sequence, like a serial number.
The first 6 characters are alpha, and the last 7 are
numeric... like this.
GKFVB5261435, GKFVB5261436, GKFVB5261437...
I need 1,000 of these

Is there a 'sequencer' in Word XP? Or can I set up a
spreadsheet to create the numbers and then print them on a
sheet of labels?

Where do I go?
Who do I call?
What can I do?

I appreciate any suggestions you may be able to offer

Thanks,

Roger

Hi Roger,

The simplest thing is to set up spreadsheet in Excel with a column of
numbers created by copying a formula that adds 1 to the cell above and then
use that spreadsheet as the data source for a label type mailmerge.

Please respond to the newsgroups for the benefit of others who may be
interested.

Hope this helps

FWIW, it's not necessary to use a formula in Excel. If you just enter the
first two numbers, you can use AutoFill to drag and fill as many more cells
as needed with sequential numbers.

Thanks Doug, but I still need help...

The "number" is combined Alpha and Numeric, and neither
formating the cell as 'general' nor 'number' will work
[=A1+1] gets #VALUE!. This only works if the cell is all
numeric.

When I use all numeric I then get a column of
numbers....but to print labels, I have to enter one at a
time, or make them all the same number to print a sheet
of labels in word/tools "envelopes and labels"

Let me know what else to try or where to look

thanks

If I enter GKFVB5261435 into a cell in an Excel sheet and GKFVB5261436 into
the cell below it, then select both cells and drag the AutoFill handle (it's
the square on the bottom right of the selection box), I get a series of
GKFVB5261437, GKFVB5261438, GKFVB5261439, and so forth for as long as I want
to drag. Excel doesn't care what the number format is.

See http://www.gmayor.dsl.pipex.com/Numbered_labels.htm

You don't need the text part of the number in the excel data only the
number. You can add the fixed text at the label.
