I am using Office 97 Pro on Win 98 SE.
When I try to use the Indent Button (or Ctrl-M) to increase indent
when document contains any text, Word crashes.
Other info:
If I Format/Paragraph/Indent to a distance, then there is no problem.
If I use the indent button in a new document it appears to work OK. If
I use it at all in a document that has text already in it, then the
problem arises.
If I use Indent in a new document, as I say it works. But then once I
have typed any text, it again crashes if Indent or Outdent (??) are
tried. So it's not something to do with older documents.
I am pretty sure it did not always do this, but I don't know when it
started and I cannot therefore identify anything I did to make it
start.
I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling Word.
I have a virus checker (InnoculateIT Personal Edition from CA)and it's
up to date.

Chances are, you have a driver conflict, or damaged driver;
most likely the graphics driver. If you boot Windows in
SAFE MODE, does the problem stop?

Thanks for that. I will check out safe mode and those sites
Tried in safe mode. No crash. Win was reporting no problem devices,
but when I checked System/device manager, it showed a prob with the
Video driver. Reinstall. Problem gone!
Thank you.
Quelle Fromage!
I have disovered that the Video driver replacement did NOT work.
I thought it was text that made Word spit the dummy. But what does it
is a new line (in other words I have hit the Enter key in the
document). I can type text, and it's ok. But if I hit Enter, or the
document contains the character gernerated by Enter, then Indent
crashes.
This happens even in Safe Mode.

And this happens with all documents?
If you close Word, then search for Normal.dot on your system. Rename it
to Normal.old. Start Word...
do you still see the problem?
OK. I renamed Normal.dot to Normal.Old
I tested Word as well as I could (indent, Enter, Indent. Type
characters. Indent etc). The problem _appears_ to have gone away.
Now here's the weird bit. When I renamed Normal.dot to Normal.old,
Word created a new Normal.dot. Ok so far. I had removed the Indent
buttons from the Format bar in Word. So the Normal.dot that I was
using _before_ I renamed had no indent buttons. So when Word created a
_new_ Normal.dot, the Indent buttons were back. Ok so far....
BUT. When I deleted the _new_ Normal.dot, and renamed the _old_ Normal
back to Normal.dot, then reinstated the Indent buttons, the problem
had still gone away.........as far as I can see.
If the problem returns, I will actually rename Normal.dot and leave it
that way, as it may be corrupted. However for now, it had enough
customsation to be worth trying to keep.
FYI. And again thanks. I hope that's the problem solved.

Yeah, that would worry me, too :-) Hope what-ever-it-was sticks!
