I use the same HP3970 scanner with WinXP-SP-3 and have HP Director
installed. The Director software does work, but I don't use it.
The HP scanner software was problematic when it was first installed. (So
long ago, I don't remember what the problems were!)
Several HP downloaded updates over the years seem to have cured the problems
with the Director.
I did disable the automatic loading features of the HP Director software and
other scanning software some time ago.
The 3970 works with the windows built in scanner functionality on my system.
Currently, there are two scanning capable devices on this system-- the HP
3970 and an Epson WF600 all in one.
The Epson scan software, the HP scan software, VueScan, and Windows built in
scan functioality at least tolerate each other
if you disable automatic load on startup, and are careful to not enable
scanner button usage in ways that create conflicts.
The Epson can be interfaced via USB Ethernet, or Wi-FI. The scanner will
work in whatever interface mode is used--BUT
It is initialy recognized by Vue Scan only if it is setup as a USB I/O
device. Once this is accomplished, It can be setup as a networked device,
and if port games are played correctly, will be recognized by VueScan. This
seems to be a common problem with many scanners and WinXP.

I would recommend trying the VueScan scanner program
http://www.hamrick.com
The Pro version has several useful additional features, such as scanner
calibration and inkjet printer calibration.

I had a similar problem, in November 2004, with HP Scanjet 2400. I
found the following solution in an HP forum,
http://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=60245&admit=109447626+1237625549783+28353475.
It worked for me, and you might want to give it a try.

"Go to windows explorer and go to these folders : C:\Program Files
\Hewlett Packard, locate Digital Imaging folder, right-click in it and
delete. Go to Control Panel, select Add/Remove Programs, locate HP
Digital Imaging and when the software ask the option, select Repair .
You may need the installation CD. Proceed with the installation,
restart your PC and let it go."
