Setting up a VPN connection to work on Windows XP. I
already have this working on my laptop which runs Windows
2000 pro. When attempting to connect on the XP desktop I
get Error 721 - The remote computer did not respond.

I have checked my settings (TCP/IP) a bazillion times....

I have searched everywhere and I have tried the following:
- turning off software compression under the TCP/IP
properties
- turning off LCP extensions under TCP/IP.

I have a cable connection with a Belkin 4-port router.
Both the laptop (this one works) and the desktop are
connected through the router and since the laptop works,
I am not suspicious of the router - cable hook up.

Now what? Thank you for any ideas!

:-D

I have the exact same problem using almost the same setup. It worked at home
last night (Tennessee) using a netgear wireless router but not today
(Houston) using a linksys wireless router.

Did you figure it out yet?

Error 721 comes when windows can not establish PPP connectivity with the
remote server. Sometimes NAT's/routers are the cause, but since you were
able to connect with win2k, that doesn't seem as likely here (though still
possible).

Have you tried switching the VPN protocol? (Networking Tab of the
connection's properties. Switch between PPTP and L2TP).

Paul,
You are a genius. I changed the VPN setting type
from "automatic" to PPTP. This is found in the
networking tab for the specific connection.

Works great now!!!! Thank you

Thanks for posting this resolution. I don't know what is broken about
protocol negotiation in your case, but this is an easy one to try out.
