Windows XP Pro/SP1. AMD Duron 800/512MB RAM. Jetway M/B.
GEForce2 64MB Video Card. 40MB Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm
HDD. Norton Utilities 2002. logitch cordles mouse &
Keyboard.
For no obvious reason and at random intervals PC just
reboots. Sometimes on Internet or in Outlook or in
AutoCAD or just listening to music CD while playing a
game.
It is very frustrating and annoying - can any one help
please?

Go the the control pannel and click on the system icon -
click the tab named Advanced - then click on the Startup
and Recovery setting button -- under system failure --
you should see a check mark in the box named Automaticly
restart -- if you remove this your system will not
shutdown on error but you may be stuck with a screen
lockup... try increasing your virtual memory check your
free space on your hard drive and clean up some of the
temp files (did you mean 40GM not 40MB?). You may need
to check if you need some of the ms criticial updates and
and install them. Hope this is helpful.

Had a similar problem.
Seemed to happen after PC had been running a while; I never proved what was
the cause, but eventually changed motherboard and power supply, and haven't
had a repeat of the problem.

Greetings --

To get started troubleshooting the cause of your problems, we'll
need to learn what specific errors are occurring and being recorded.

To get the error message from the blue screen (a.k.a. the BSOD --
Blue Screen of Death), you'll need to turn off WinXP's automatic
reboot "feature:" Right-click My Computer > Properties > Advanced >
Startup and Recovery > Uncheck "Automatically restart." The next time
your PC crashes, you'll be left with a blue screen full of memory
addresses and other seeming gibberish. The top 2 or 3 lines of this
screen will contain information that can help solve your problem.
Carefully write down these lines and post the exact text back here.
Hopefully, one of us will be able to provide some insight.

Additionally, you should check your Event Logs to see if they can
shed any light on the matter, To do so, Right-click My Computer >
Manage > Event Viewer > System and Application. Record the specifics
of any red-flagged error messages and post the exact text back here.
Again, hopefully, one of us will be able to provide some insight.

>Dear Bob
I am experiencing the exact same problem you are
describing and know how you feel.
Unfortunately I have had no feedback so far but will let
you know if I do.

Open up the device manager (from system in control panel) and select view,
then show hidden devices. If you have a disabled legacy acpi (I think)
device then enable it and re-boot.
