Debra,
I was obviously posting in the wrong XP area. Thank you.
The error occurs when I boot up. The toolbar,etc
initializes, then the error message appears. I cannot
close it.
I don't see instructions from you or from the other
respondant.
No, the error is not associated with any program. I
appears to be a Office/Windows XP problem.
The problem started a few weeks ago. I have racked my
brain trying to remember what happened. The only things
I can think of are downloads, upgrades, or my daughter.
Both dangerous to a computer!
I am on a stand alone at home.

For future reference, please don't ask for one person in your subject;
there are a lot of VERY capable people (MVPs recognized by MS for their
expertise, as well as others) here who might be discouraged from even
reading the post due to the subject line, and with 1000 messages or so per
day, someone can easily overlook one with one's name in it.
I'm still not understanding, though, have you tried inserting the XP
installation CD at the prompt?
You could also try putting the XP CD in the drive & using SFC/SCANNOW,
which should offer to repair any wrong-version XP files that might've been
replaced by some software that was installed.
And since you mention a "daughter", please make sure you have up-to-date
anti-virus software installed, and also check your system with Ad-aware
from http://www.lavasoftusa.com ... because I continue to hear horror
stories about what (older) kids have done to their parent's computers, by
using Kazaa or downloading programs from the internet or opening
virus-infected email or ... well ... you get the picture.
It's also possible that the error relates to some problem with the Office
install; you might disable all the startup items (including the toolbar)
using MSCONFIG, then add them back in one-by-one until you find out which
one is triggering the error. Unfortunately there are a lot of potential
reasons for this, but that should help pin it down.

If this is the case and you have the space:
Insert your XP CD/Perform Additional Tasks/Browse this CD/Locate the I386
folder/Right click/Copy and Paste into your C:\ drive in a pre- specified
folder.
Then change the location path: Note: exclude i386 from the path.
Then alter the source path: Start/Run/Regedit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
In the right pane, double click SourcePath and type in exactly, the path to
where the files can be found. (The folder to where the files have been
copied to). Registry, exit.
Also, modify accordingly for SP1: In the right pane, change the value of
ServicePackSourcePath.
