Windows update fails every single time with the same error. What is this? MS
search turns up nothing related to this specific problem. The only 2 updates
that failed to install (according to Windows Update website) are KB901214 and
KB923191. These 2 come up with the error 0x80080008. The other 58 that are
downloaded and just won't install are failed with error 080004002. It states
WARNING: WU client failed installing updates with error 0x80004002 in the
WindowsUpdate.log file.

Any ideas anyone?

Might be an issue with the latest Version of the Windows Update
Agent/Client not installing/registering the associated .dll files properly.
Give this a shot -
Open a Command Prompt by going to Start > Run > type in

cmd
Click OK or press Enter

At the prompt, enter each of these commands, pressing Enter after *each* one

net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
net start wuauserv
exit

Restart the system and see if the updates install now.

Hey, thanks! It works now. Only thing is that when I restarted and went back
to Update more, I get the error 0X800A0046. No articles helped me either:

910338
883821
917499

Tried all of these and it gets me nowhere. What now? I've come so far and I
don't want to replace the HDD just for this.

0X800A0046 CTL_PermissionDenied
> The folder "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution" may be marked as hidden. Turn that option off.

Using Windows Explorer, locate SoftwareDistribution and right click it.
Choose Properties.
Remove the check mark next to Attributes: Hidden
Read-only should be checked.
Click Apply, OK

Well that fixed the 0x800A0046 error. Now (this doesn't seem to be ending!) I
have a 0x8DDD0002 error when accessing the Update page "You receive an
"Administrators only" error message when you try to visit the Windows Update
Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site". This is getting out of hand. I
have done the tricks the KB316524 mentions with no luck. I am trying the last
method (6) and from there I 'll have to try again on Monday. This all started
when Norton dumped it's program after an update from MS. Hmmmm.... Then I
figured out that removing XP SP2 fixes the Norton program issue, and I get
the original errors not allowing any updates to install. So your help has
been fantastic, thank you for that. I hope it's not as bad as this one for
the other 6 I have to fix. Jeez.

ALL of this is caused by Norton, not any update. Norton is a PoS and you
can quote me on that <w>
Instead of us killing flies one at a time, let's see if we can get rid
of them all at once. <w>

Is SP2 installed now ? What antivirus is installed ?

Yes, SP2 is installed. Norton is our corporate A/V. It's purchased on a
license basis. This particular user has 2005. A key note is that when Norton
first failed, you could not re-install it after removing it. Symantec could
not figure it out.

(I do agree that Norton is a PoS too)

Any more information from the last message? I wrote:

Sorry ... use Dial-a-fix to repair NAV's damage:
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix#Download_Dial-a-fix

It's faster than doing it by hand, Shawn.

That's a nice program, but it did not resolve the issue. I'm very temtped to
just can the NAV and contact Symantec. I have a really bad time with them
though.

I forgot to ask, maybe I'm doing something wrong? How does it fix NAV's
damage? I did not see any mention of specific files related to Symantec or
Norton in there.

It repairs files/Services/Permissions that NAV damages.
Post a WindowsUpdate.log and maybe we can see where the update process
is failing.

Start > Run > type in

%windir%\windowsupdate.log
Press Enter

Start at the bottom of the log for the most recent entries and look for
errors that are preceded by FATAL.
Post that entry plus about 20 or 30 lines above the FATAL error, Shawn.
