removing text labels from desktop icons

How do I do it? In other words, I want my desktop icons
to appear WITHOUT the labels ("My Computer", "My Network
Places", "Internet Explorer," etc.).

Hello Maximus,

Do the following:

- Open the 'Folder Options' menu in the Control Panel
- Click on the 'View' tab
- Scroll all the way to the bottom of the list displayed
- Un-check "Show pop-up description......"
- Click OK

Thank you for this, but I'm afraid nothing happened after I unchecked it.
It's not the little pop up explanations that I'm trying to get rid of. It's
the actual labels under the desktop icons themselves, i.e., the text "My
Computer", "My Network Places", "Internet Explorer," "Recycling Bin", "My
Documents," and whatever other shortcut I place on my desktop.

In that case, we are both at a loss. I do not know, and could not find, a
way to disable or remove the text in WinXP. The "tweak" (renaming the
shortcut using extended characters) used for Win95/98 does not seem to work
in XP. Since none of the WinXP experts have responded to your request, I'm
going to assume there isn't a tweak available -- yet.

To have transparent color:

Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Advanced/Performance/Settings/ Visual
Effects/"Use drop shadows for icon labels on the Desktop"

Right click the desktop and select Arrange Icons. Towards the bottom of that
list, uncheck "Lock web items on the desktop."

I don't know how to remove the labels but what I did was to remove the icons
and place them (automatically) on a desktop toolbar which you can float and
auto hide. When you create the desktop toolbar it allows you to hide the
text of the icons. You then right click on the desktop, select 'arrange
icons by' then deselect 'show desktop icons'. This makes the original
desktop icons disappear and you then have the desktop toolbar which is
hidden but contains all of the original icons on it. Makes all your
wallpaper come alive!!
