I support many PC's and I always look at optional updates and drivers. When
I decide I do not want to install an optional update (like office Live) I
just hide it.

HOWEVER, EVERYTIME I TRY TO HIDE SILVERLIGHT ON ANY MACHINE INCLUDING CLEAN
LOADS IT ALWAYS APPEARS THE NEXT TIME I RUN CUSTOM UPDATES!!!

What gives Microsoft???

Annoyed support.

You can hide this month's MSRT, too, but you'll still be offered next
month's version.

I cannot hide it. It does say it is hidden (allows me to) but if you rerun
custome updates it appears again.

I do not mean it wont allow me to - I mean it wont stay hidden. It hides
only when you say to but the next time you run updates its back. This is on
a clean load as well. I have thested this on 200 machines so far. I was
yelling at my employees (we do preventative maintenace) for not hiding it -
it appears to hide but no such luck on the next run of custom updates!!!

You manage 200 machines and you aren't using a better method of patch
management yet? ;-)

That is my market niche here. We purposely do it by hand for all the
Allstate agents that do not have servers and were kicked off the Allstate
management network.

The personal touch to every PC - not just reports that are passed on and not
looked at. Personal attention to every PC!

And yes 200 and counting.

For home users ONLY, no-charge support is available by calling
1-866-PCSAFETY in the United States and in Canada or by contacting your
local Microsoft subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are
associated with security updates. When you call, clearly state that your
problem is related to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number
(e.g., KB999999).

Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.

I can reproduce this behaviour, so it isn't you. I'm afraid I don't have any
ideas as to why this might be or how to fix it, though.

Harry.

This is a WU bug. It's specifics became clear to me when I hid Bing Desktop v1.3 and Bing Desktop 1.2 showed up when I next checked for updates.
Upon careful inspection I had noticed that each of the silverlight updates are each with a different date and ID.

So lets say there are 10 silverlight versions released. V10 will obsolete v1 through v9, such that only v10 will show up when you check for updates, but all 10 are still considered as valid updates by your machine.
Choosing to hide v10 will cause v9 to show up, hiding v9 will show v8 the next time you check for updates, and so on and so forth until you have hid every single version.

If you are persistent about it you can hide every single version of silverlight and it stops showing up (until the next version is released by MS).
