If I just double click KB837009.exe it says that this update needs SP1
uinstalled. I have previously sought this update only to be told that I had
all the components already installed.
A little while ago someone told me (on here but cant find it again) to
delete some files in a system folder somewhere to correct this. I did this
but didn';t have your advice then so still remained stuck. Now I am hoping
that your strategy might work if I delete the previous record. (I thought
your advice re TIF etc might do the trick but sadly not.)
That's why I didn't say double-click on it. <wink> (Actually that message
is stating that you have a later update installed that replaced 837009,
which in fact is probably true.)
Let's back up a tad:
1. OE Help > About > Files: What versions of MSOE.DLL and INETCOMM.DLL are
displayed here?
2. Is Windows installed on your C: drive? (If you have the folder
C:\Windows, it is.)
3. Is MSIMN.EXE located in C:\Programs\Outlook Express?
4. Is 'Outlook Express - KB823353' (or similar) found in Add/Remove
Programs?
The fact that you're having problems getting 896688 installed (as posted in
another thread here) may indicate greater problems.
To assure a clean install of anything, including Windows Updates, your
anti-virus application should be disabled and all other running processes
closed before beginning the install.

I have :-
msoe.dll 6.00.2800.1437
inetcom.dll 6.00.2800.1441
No ref to KB823353 in "Add/Remove programs"
If not, you may have gotten a bad or incomplete download from...
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=925628BD-1B5F-4B21-8DÂB6-EDE1C73F97B5&displaylang=en
(a slightly different URL than I posted previous; corrected in quote below)
Delete what you've got now and get a fresh copy using one of the above links
then try repeating the steps I posted earlier. BTW, rebooting into Safe
Mode is not needed: Try it in normal (Windows) mode, logged on as
Administrator if need be.

Just checked my IE it is :-
Version 6.0.2800.1106
Update versions SP1; q313829; q867282; q891781; 890923; q883939; q903235;
q896727;
so presumably Windows update thinks I dont have SP1 and my IE thinks I do!
And I haven't a clue!
(Coronation Street has nothing on this!)
The download page *must* contain the following content or it's not the right
page:
<QP>
This update applies to Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 (SP1) with the
following operating systems:
Windows XP SP1
Windows XP
Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me)
Windows 2000 SP2
Windows 2000 SP3
Windows 2000 SP4
Windows 98 SE
Windows 98
Windows NT® 4.0 SP6A
</QP>
The links I'm posting are for downloading 837009 for OE6 SP1, not 823353
(which is already installed on your machine, from what you've posted here).

Something's fishy: The latest IE Cumulative Update you have installed is
806727 (Aug-05). Does Windows Update not offer you 896688 (Nov-05), John??

The other problem I had I sought help with from Microsoft. There Danielle
had lots of suggestions, then came up with
Click on Start > Run and type msinfo32 and click OK.
Click Tools > Internet Explorer Repair Tool.
Run the repair option.
I was told I needed a newer version of ATL.DLL and had MSCAT32.DLL and
SCRRUN.DLL missing. I was advivised to reinstall IE to replace these files.
This I did and was able for the first time since last October install the
updates I was downloading.
However the reoccuring KB837009 thing started again... so I repeated your
trick and that seems to have cured it.
Thanks for all your help
Cheers

I read and tried all what has been said about this issue, I still have
essential update kb837009 been offered.
I reinstalled ME and other (essential) updates; kb837009 is boring me.
I have run kb837009.exe /n:v in safe mode and in normal mode.
I removed KB837009 and did it again.
MSOE.DDL and INECOMM.DLL are both 6.00.2800.1478.
WU still asks for essential update 837009.
Who can help, what else can I do?
Regards,
Coen
> I reinstalled ME and other (essential) updates...
Did you uninstall IE6 SP1 /prior/ to reinstalling WinME?
My question notwithstanding: Go to Windows Update website | Select CUSTOM
and scan | Uncheck (deselect) KB837009 and "hide" it.

I don't see what you mean by hiding KB837009, I don't recognize that in my
(Dutch) version of WU.
Do you mean that I don't need to worry about WU offering this update any more?

Take a look at Noel Paton's page :-
"Reinstalling ME over itself - without tears"
http://www.crashfixpc.co.uk/reinME.htm
However, you *may* find it easier (quicker?) to undertake a fresh 'clean
install' than to try to disentangle the IE6 and Media Player 9 'soup'.
If you do go for the clean install, BACK-UP your data first and be sure to
look at (and print out) the "cleanhd.txt" file in the win9x folder on your
WinMe CD (and in the install folder mentioned earlier). You can also view
the "Windows Millennium Edition Cleanhd.txt File Contents" at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;271673
Study it carefully and be sure you have a note of your 'productid' code (the
25 digit code that is supplied with your CD - or use Belarc Advisor from
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html ) and - if your WinMe CD is an
'upgrade' version (rather than a 'full version') - some proof of a 'previous
version' - e.g. your Win98 CD (N.B not required for OEM)
You might also find the following KB article, "How to Use the Fdisk Tool and
the Format Tool to Partition or Repartition a Hard Disk" helpful.

Whatever you decide, good luck

Thank you for all the information. After doubting some time whether or not
take any further risks (?), I decided to follow the directions of Noel Paton.
I did as follows:
- install and run latest versions of Lavasoft and SpyBot
- delete c:\windows\system\wmploc.dll
- run ie6remov.bat and ie6ermov.bat and ie6remov.reg
- run scanreg /backup, but I'm not sure it worked well
- start from WinME-diskette in minimal mode
- run c:\os\win9x\startup.exe
- three times automatic restart during setup
- first normal start gave an error on HP directcd
- system stopped responding
- manual restart in safe mode, with automatic scandisk
- restart again in normal mode; everything looks working normal (including
HP directcd)
- run ie6setup from disk; after some while it stopped, saying is has not
installed:
* Internet Explorer 6 webbrowser
* package for off-line surfing
* browser changes
- automatic reboot
- ie6setup automatic asking to continue; I gave it a chance; it stopped with
the same messages
- automatic reboot again
- I cancelled ie6setup
So far no problems any more. I'm running IE5.50.4134.0100 now.
In a previous attempt I got IE6 installed by first removing the folder
c:\program files\internet explorer\uninstall information, but I don't want to
do it again by myself.
Outlook Expres 6 shows inetcomm.dll and msoe.dll both 6.00.2800.1478.
WU advises me:
- IE6 SP1
- security updates KB888113 and KB891781 for WinME
I would like to have your advise what to do next, before making soup again
;-).
Kind regards, and thanks for all your help so far.
Coen
From this distance, I'd be inclined to continue with the options offered on
the WU site and go for IE6 SP1 from the site (rather than disk) and (all)
other updates available - one at a time if necessary, doing (or confirming)
an SR point before each one. Step SR back if an issue arises
Easy to say from here, but you're sat at the wheel.
Good luck.

- I first selected WinME security updates KB888113 and KB89171 to install
- after reboot both appear in the installed history, but KB888113 also is
offered again to be installed
- I selected IE6SP1 from the windowsupdatesite, but it ends with the same
message as before: "not all components installed, reboot and continue"
- KB88113 as well as IE6SP1 appear in the installation history, AND are
being offered again as essential updates to be installed
What's next?
Thanks,
Coen
I vaguely recall there being issues with at least one (KB89171 rings a bell)
if not both of those updates about 3 or 4 years ago, but can't remember
what. If Mike M is watching, perhaps he can recall? Didn't MS re-issue it?
I seem to remember plenty of chatter about it on the news groups, but as it
didn't affect me, I didn't keep any notes of the issues.
Until or unless some one else chirps in, I can't really help further - other
than a clean install (ouch!) - except to suggest you try MS Knowledge Base
(e.g.
http://support.microsoft.com/search/default.aspx?mode=a&query=ie6+sp1+install+fails&catalog=LCID%3D1033&1033comm=1&spid=6519
or try Googling "ie6 sp1 install fails" and/or "KB89171"
Best of luck
