Hi Fred,

The error means: "HTTP STATUS BAD REQUEST". How are you accessing the
Internet? Are you using any 3rd party apps that hide your IP address?
Anonymous web surfing program?
Try:

1. Click on Start/Run
2. Type "cmd" (w/o quotes)in the open box to get to a DOS prompt
3. Type "proxycfg -d" (w/o quotes) at the C prompt and hit enter
4. Type "net stop wuauserv" (w/o quotes) at the C prompt and hit enter
5. Type "net start wuauserv" (w/o quotes) at the C prompt and hit enter
6. Now try the site again.

Thanks,
Lucy [MSFT]

We are behind a corporate firewall and proxy server and are seeing this error
message. Does this mean we are not able to run windows update on our
corporate network anymore??

We are also on a network behind a firewall with a proxy server and are having
the same problem. The only fix that I have found is to install XP service
pack 2 manually. This is becoming harder to do since microsoft removed the
single pc install for XP SP2 from support.microsoft.com. The best place that
I have found to download this is from this site:

SP2 installs microsofts security center and firewall, which is the biggest
pain you will have since there update site stopped working for everyone
behind a network firewall with a proxy.

Disabling the following services will remove the security center and
firewall, "Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)" and "Security
Center".

Give it a shot...It is the only way that I've found to get the windows
update site to work.

Perhaps we've spread ourselves a bit thin by working too hard on our Windows
Media Music Site and other gag related products instead of worry about our
flagship OS.
Spend some of the millions which are going into the Media site and secure
and streamline your OS! The WinFS can't come out with Longhorn because
you're worried about the soon to be obsolete iPod, take a step back and
realize you have very very very unsatisfied customers who have nowhere else
to turn!

As for the tips......You can still download the SP2 from microsoft via their
downloads site, then SP2 for Network Admins. As for the tips that are
mentioned over and over from the MS crew....haven't had much luck there.
If you've run SP2 Beta, please UNISTALL it before attempting to download any
updates, you'll only run into trouble. Once you have it uninstalled, you
should not have much of a problem running the Update site (even behind a
corporate firewall). If you're working with Users......remove the pop up
blocker ability (it's too difficult to find) in Internet Options. If you're
running Opera or Mozilla, remove any and all IE attributes through Add/Remove
as this will save you headaches!

If anyone comes up with a systematic approcah to adding updates behind a
firewall that is consistant and reliable, I would love to hear it!!!!!!!!!!

Have you tried 842773? (one of the patches that XPsp2 supersedes)
Notice that the article points back to KB842309 where you can find
some information which you may need to tweak the patch to enable
successful authentication, especially if you are using a proxy.

It appears this problem is because users of XP workstations are sat behind
ISA proxy servers. The best way this error can be described is as a client
side proxy setting incongruency.

See http://www.electrosonics.net/technotes/xperror0x8024502D.htm for a
solution to the problem.

1. Click on Start, and then click Run.
2. Type cmd in the Open box to get a DOS prompt.
3. Type proxycfg -u at the command prompt, and press Enter.

"For what ever reason, Windows does synchronize the proxy settings when the
user makes changes to the Internet Options proxy settings. Apparently this
only has significant impact on the Windows Update Control as all other
Internet Enabled programs seem to work just fine even when the winHTTP proxy
settings do not agree with the user entered proxy settings."

"It appears that Microsoft has more work to do to synchronize the proxy
settings when the user makes changes to the Internet Options proxy settings.
Until Microsoft fixes this, the Windows Update service for XP will continue
to fail for those users who sit behind an ISA server unless the users
implement the work around listed above."

"Ian Stanway",

While this solution can sometimes work using the procedures you mention
here, this is a step missing. The proxy configuration is an unknown
quantity when someone wants to change it. The best thing to do, if you are
going to change the proxy, is to clear the proxy cache, before applying the
new proxy. For example:

1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type: cmd <Enter>
4. In the Command Prompt, type: proxycfg <Enter> <-- To display proxy
settings.
5. Type: proxycfg -d <-- To clear the proxy cache, and to set the proxy
on direct access.
6. Type: proxycfg -p prxyname:0000 <Enter> <-- Where prxyname is the
NETBIOS name of your proxy server, and 0000 is replaced with the port your
proxy server settings use to access the Internet over HTTP. As an example,
if I had a proxy server with the name golf1 and I used port 80 to access the
Internet over HTTP, then the command would be:
proxycfg -p golf1:80 <Enter>

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]
