Installation Failure . Error Code: 0x643

hello i am trying to update Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework,
Version 2.0 (KB917283), but it says its been failed, any idea why, i have
already tried about 7 or 8 times but the same message comes up.

Identical scenario for me. In addition Security Update for Office 2003
(KB917151) gives error code 0x80070643.

All other worked fine.

Please post the contents of C:\WINDOWS\KB917283.log

Please work through thje advice at

Ehm, there's no KB917283.log, but there should be a "ngen.log"
file located in the %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727
folder.

mentiones 0x643 as "Fatal error during installation (this error
is returned if any custom action fails within an MSI-based setup
for example)". The ngen.log file may have some further details.

In case nothing helps, we/those having problems, may consider
running
"%windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0\install.exe"
via Start -> Run (including the quotation marks!) and choose
"Repair".

Download the "dotnetfx_cleanup_tool", Run it, and use the spin box to remove Microsoft .NET
Framework 2.0. Leave version 1 alone. After it uninstalls and reboots, go to Windows Update
and it will show that Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 needs to be installed. After that, the
update for it (KB917283) will install correctly. Another pain in the ass from Microsoft. You
would think the error message would TELL you that 2.0 is not working right...

I solved the problem by uninstalling .net ver 2 using add/remove, Then
running the cleanup program. Then reinstalling .net ver 2 then install the
security patch.
Time consuming if not on DSL

I had the same problem...downloaded and ran the dotnetfx_cleanup_tool,
removed Microsoft .Net Version 1.1 and 2.0 (Version 1.1 by accident) Went to
WSindows Update which identidied 2 Custom Installs.... .NET Framework Version
1.1 ans .NET Framework 2.) x86 (KB829019) which I found peculiar given
KB917283 was the original download and problem. Thanks for the help

So after doing all that, at next reboot the Windows update shield appeared in
the bottom right hand corner. Windows Update listed .NET Framework Service
Pack 1 and update KB917283 as Priority Downloads. Download and installation
for both a success. Trial and error from one who is hopeless. Thanks again.

Hello there,

Same here for the net 2.0 security update.
The logbooks show configuration errors and installation errors.
Very anoying.

Now the yellow shields in the status bar comes up every time we log on to XP
and tries to install the update whenever we close XP.

Same here I'm afraid to dig any deeper afraid I'll have to do another Syste
Recovery. I just got Norton 360 and the tech thought it had something to do
with my installation but it didn't she couldn't figure it out either she told
me to contact Microsoft so now my computer has no virus protection because I
can't put the Program back in. I don't know what to do but wait.
