The numbers are growing as I have had the same problems

I have Windows XP Home Service Pack 2 which has been automatically updating
successfully until this time. There is 8.78 GB free space on a 20 GB primary
drive and 70 GB free on the secondary drive which is used for data storage.
After trying to update the latest security patches several times I keep
getting the same error message

The following updates failed to be installed successfully:

• Security Update for Windows XP (KB888302)

• Security Update for Windows XP (KB890047)
• Security Update for Windows Messenger (KB887472)
• Security Update for Windows XP (KB885250)
• Security Update for Windows XP (KB891781)

• Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - February 2005 (KB890830)
• Security Update for Windows XP (KB873333)

Add me to the list for a minute there I thought I was the only one having
this problem looks like I'm not the only one but so far no help? It's very
annoying I've never had a problem with updates until now I get the same 9
updates to install and I'm able start the install process but my machine just
hangs at "initializing installation..." and nothing ever installs I have even
let it run all night. I have tried serveral times already but to no avail.

And me as well (+KB885835). 1 of my 2KP systems out of 6 work stations and 1
server along with 2 XPPro would not update. I even tried a manual update and
got the error that OS2.exe was running and prevented the update. So I
searched all background programs and services, could not find it. Then I
turned everything Off (bp & svc's) same. I give up! Maybe they will
reinstate the service packs which will include the cure.

Take care all

I reported the problems to Microsoft and received the suggestions set out
below.

I have still not succeeded as the command "Regsvr32 wuauengl.dll" generated
the error message "load library ("wuauengl.dll") failed - the specified
module could not be found"

I am still hoping that Microsoft will send me a fix which works. Perhaps
this helps someone.

Step 1: Disable any firewall, pop-up blockers, and download accelerators
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First of all if you are running any firewall, pop-up blockers, download
accelerators such as Ad-aware or ZoneAlarm or PC-Cillin or Norton Antivirus
or Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall or Proxomitron pop-up
blocker or Ad Muncher or web accelerator e.g. "Slipstream", I would recommend
you to temporarily disable or shut down any of these installed on your system
and try accessing Windows Update site, as many of these have been known to
stop Windows Updates from working correctly. Sometimes even when these are
disabled they still may affect the Windows Updates and they may need to be
uninstalled completely. So if you have any of these on your PC please let me
know.

Try the Windows Update site now. If this doesn’t resolve the issue try the
next step.

Step 2: Register dll files
--------------------------------
1) Close all instances of Internet Explorer.
2) Click Start and Run, type ‘Regsvr32 wuapi.dll’ (without quotes) in the
Open box and click OK.
Note: There is a space between regsvr32 and the .dll file

3) Similarly one by one register the files listed below:

Regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
Regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
Regsvr32 wucltui.dll
Regsvr32 wups.dll
Regsvr32 wuweb.dll
Regsvr32 jscript.dll
Regsvr32 atl.dll
Regsvr32 softpub.DLL
Regsvr32 wintrust.DLL
Regsvr32 dssenh.DLL
Regsvr32 rsaenh.DLL
Regsvr32 gpkcsp.DLL
Regsvr32 slbcsp.DLL
Regsvr32 cryptdlg.DLL

Try the Windows Update site now.

having just spent three days trying to sort this problem i seem to have found
a temporary way to manually download updates
that is my computer kept failing to install updates time after time

first on the update page after searching for updates

click on one update item for its details and then keep going on the
details on the pop up(in a blue line link to website)
and then it will take you to a page, where it has written somewhere down
the page "downlad the update" next to the operating systems for
different types of computers/ systems
(sorry but prior to this you will have to allow pop ups for this site or
you will for ever be going backwards to the looking for updates page)
fortunately i did not have to turn any firewalls or virus or adaware off
this way takes along time and i still do not know if it will do any good
in the future but i managed to get all ten of my downloads in

another way to get at the details is to double click on any of the failed
downloads on the view installation history page

there was one rather difficult one which required verifying with windows
registration and not being an I.T. person i can not put it more
technically

this is from another semi literate
hope this helps someone

Thank you Geoff Hawkins!
After all this I did those simple things that you suggested.
In addition I updated my Antivirus and anti spyware and made sure that my
computer was free of both before downloading.
I turned both Norton and Adaware off.
I went to Windows "Express Install (Recommended) High Priority Updates for
your computer"
I installed all the Updates that have previously failed to install
successfully!
Thank you!

That should be your clue that you could have made a typo? <eg>

Thanks Geoff Hawkins your suggestion worked I was able to install all 10 of
my updates. I did exactly like you suggested I turned off all Pop up Blockers
and security software and reregistered the .dll files you mentioned then I
was able to manually install all needed updates through windows updates.
Thanks again I spent a lot of time trying to figure this out.-Kause

"Kause",

I realize that I am late to comment on this, but this problem can only be
narrowed down by trying to install just one update and posting the results
of that. Here's how:

Conventions:
- In these instructions, keys on the keyboard are wrapped, such as: <Enter>,
so an instruction of:
Type: cmd <Enter> means type the three letters cmd and then press
<Enter>.
- Combinations such as <Ctrl>+<S> mean to hold the <Ctrl> while then
pressing the <S>.

On Windows XP:
1. Close all Internet browsers, but maintain connection to the Internet
2. Open a single Internet Explorer window.
3. On the menu bar, click Tools
4. Look now at the system clock, and let the minute move forward one.
5. Quickly click the "Windows Update" link.
6. If offered the choice (and we assume somewhere along here it fails):
a. Accept new "Windows Update" software for scanning your system.
b. Choose "Custom Install" instead of "Express Install"
c. If presented with updates, uncheck all but one (your choice)
d. Click Install to install that one update.
7. Close the Internet Explorer window.
8. Click Start
9. Click Run
10. Type: %WINDIR%\WindowsUpdate.log <Enter> (note that there are no quotes
needed, and no space between Windows and Update.)
11. Next, when the log has opened, scroll all the way down to the hour and
minute where the attempt was started in step 4. Click at the beginning of
the line to leave the cursor there.
12. Verify the cursor is at the beginning of the correct time, then select
the rest of the log.
a. Either press <Shift>+<Ctrl>+<End>, or
b. Click and drag with the mouse down and to the right, scrolling.
13. When all is selected, copy this part of the log by pressing <Ctrl>+<C>
14. Reply back to this posting.
15. When the reply opens, tell us what update you were attempting to
install, and where you believed you hit the failure. For example:
a. While attempting to reach the Windows Update website?
b. After reaching the website, but then failed while scanning for
updates?
c. After successfully reaching the website, scanning for updates, and
being offered updates, we then fail while attempting to install one.
16. Please type in the reply: Log entries follow:
17. Then paste the log results by pressing <Ctrl>+<V>
18. Verify everything is in the reply, and post the reply. I'll be happy to
take a look at it.

Windows 2000 (the functionality and log are slightly different):
Follow the instructions above, but with these minor changes:
6 b. Choose "Scan for Updates" <--There is no choice in v4.
10. Type: "%WINDIR%\Windows Update.log" <Enter> (note: Please do not forget
the quotes or the space between Windows and Update.)

Windows 98 and Millenium Edition:
Please follow the instructions for Windows 2000 with one important
difference:
10. Type: "%WINBOOTDIR%\Windows Update.log" <Enter> (note: Please do not
forget the quotes or the space between Windows and Update.)

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]
