Whenever I try to go to the Windows Update site or the Microsoft Update
site, I receive the above error, while it checks if I have the latest Windows
Update Software installed. I followed a procedure sent to me by a Microsoft
support representative, which did not cure the problem. Does anyone have any
suggestions.

Peter;

I tried the following procedure, which includes the removal of the
software distribution folder and it did not fix the problem.

Suggestion 2: Clean up Windows Update temporary folder
==============================================
1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command in the opened window:

NET stop WuAuServ

2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.
3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to Sdold. 4.
Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command
in the opened window:

NET start WuAuServ

After that, please visit the Windows Update website to check the result.

Visit the Windows Update site.
===============
Open Internet Explorer, and click Tools-> Windows Update to install Windows
Update. If any update failed to be installed, please let me know the detailed
name of the update or capture a screenshot of the failed screen.

Notice: We can find the error code on the top right hand side of the screen.

If any error message or error code was received, please also assist me to
capture an error screenshot file to narrow down the issue.

1) If any error message appears please press the Print Screen key (PrtScn)
on your keyboard. 2. Click Start, click Run, type MSPAINT, and click OK. 3.
In Paint, click Paste under the Edit Menu, click Save under the File menu,
type a file name for the snap shot, choose JPEG as "Save as type", click
“Desktop” on the left pane, and click Save. 4. Please find the screenshot on
the Desktop and send it as an attachment to:

If we still encountered update issue, please help to collect the following
information for further research:

WindowsUpdate.log
======================
1) Click "Start", click "Run", type: %windir% and then press Enter.
2) Locate a file named "WindowsUpdate.log". Please be aware that there may
be another file named "Windows Update.log". I am requesting the file without
a space in the middle of the name.
3) Please send this file to my email account:

Thank you for your suggestion; I had the auto update service disabled,

Ok I re-enabled the service and tried your suggesion, using the link that

Sorry When I select you link the following URL is in the address bar.

http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

there is no option to install the Active X control, it simply presents the
same error. I don't
believe that I am part of any Beta group.

Hi,
Your machine somehow got a beta version of WSUS 3.0 client.
If you are not part of any beta program, I recommend that you go back to
WSUS 2.0 client by following the procedure below

1. Please download the file below
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v6/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe
and save it in a folder say C:\temp
2. Open a command prompt and run the following commands
a. net stop wuauserv
b. C:\temp\WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe /wuforce
and follow the prompts to install WSUS 2.0 client
c. rd /s /q %windir%\softwaredistribution
d. net start wuauserv
3. Now go to Windows update web site and try to scan for updates.

Please let me know if the above doesn’t resolve the problem

Sudheer;

Finally. Thank you very much for your persistance. Unfortunately
without the link to download the proper WSUS version, this would still be an
un-resolved issue. Thankfully though it is resolved. One small thing, is
that when the installation for the update service runs, it restarts the
wuauserv service and therefore the softwaredistribution folder cannot be
removed without again stopping the automatic update service. Once that was
done though everything went great. I went back to Microsoft Update and
downloaded and installed five updates. Please let me know if I can send a
note to someone on your professionalism in dealing with this issue. Your
help was quicker and better than that of the Microsoft support individual
that was looking into the issue.

Again Thank You

Hijacked conversation?

Try this:

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\net stop wuauserv
--> Click OK.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\wups2.dll
--> Click OK.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\net start wuauserv
--> Click OK.

Download the latest version of the Windows Update agent from here (x86):
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237
... and save it to the root of your C:\ drive. After saving it to the root
of the C:\ drive, do the following:

Close all Internet Explorer Windows and other applications.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemDrive%\windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe /WUFORCE
--> Click OK.

(If asked, select "Run.) --> Click on NEXT --> Select "I agree" and click on
NEXT --> When it finishes installing, click on "Finish"...

Reboot.

Log on as an user with administrative rights and open Internet Explorer and
visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and select to do a CUSTOM scan...

Once the scan is done, select all the critical, any of the optional software
updates you want and *none* of the option hardware updates and install them.
Reboot again.

If all that fails for you, get this:
(Thanks to MowGreen!)

- Download and *save*: AU Check (v78)
http://www.codeplex.com/aureset/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=17263

- Once the download completes, close all open browsers and programs.

- Physically disconnect the system from the Internet for now (pull the
wire.)

- TOTALLY disable the installed antivirus/security suite**
Either read the UserGuide/Help file included with the product or visit
the manufacturer's web site so that *all* services and processes are
stopped.

- Since the system needs to be re-connected to the net/network, enable
the native Windows firewall for now (Disable any third party firewalls.)
1.Click Start, click Run, type Firewall.cpl, and then click OK.
2.On the General tab, click On (recommended), and then click OK.

- Connect the machine physically back to the Internet.

- Install au_check_v78_codeplex.exe now. Be patient as the operation can
take some time.

- Reboot.

**Re-enable the installed AV/security suite [if a 3rd party firewall was
disabled, re-enable that too, then disable the native Windows firewall.]

- Log on as an user with administrative rights and open Internet Explorer
and visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and select to do a
CUSTOM scan...

- Once the scan is done, select all the critical, any of the optional
software updates you want and *none* of the option hardware
updates and install them.

- Reboot again.

Come back and let us know of any errors you encountered - verbatim. Don't
try to RECALL as you go - but write down the errors word-for-word. ;-)

You have hijacked another's thread and your problem appears to be related to
the "1058" error and not the 0x80245003 but I'm only guessing.

System may be infected with malware "Vundo"

I would try to explain very clear:

I follow your instructions for first method but it did not work: when I
installed Windows Update Agent error 0x80070422 show before instalation
finished so it never was installed; so I try the second method (MowGreen
method) following all steps and everything was running great with AU Check
(v78) but when last reboot was done the original problem appear: the Windows
Update web page can work with my computer and error messaje 0x8DDD0018 show
in the page, so I tried to start manually this in my system but messaje 1058
appear again, I hope to be clear when explaning... :) Thanks

there is no option to install the Active X control, it simply presents the
same error. I don't
believe that I am part of any Beta group.

Hi,
Your machine somehow got a beta version of WSUS 3.0 client.
If you are not part of any beta program, I recommend that you go back to
WSUS 2.0 client by following the procedure below

1. Please download the file below
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v6/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe
and save it in a folder say C:\temp
2. Open a command prompt and run the following commands
a. net stop wuauserv
b. C:\temp\WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe /wuforce
and follow the prompts to install WSUS 2.0 client
c. rd /s /q %windir%\softwaredistribution
d. net start wuauserv

3. Now go to Windows update web site and try to scan for updates.

Please let me know if the above doesn???t resolve the problem

Sudheer;

I would try to explain very clear:

I follow your instructions for first method but it did not work: when I
installed Windows Update Agent error 0x80070422 show before instalation
finished so it never was installed; so I try the second method (MowGreen
method) following all steps and everything was running great with AU Check
(v78) but when last reboot was done the original problem appear: the Windows
Update web page can work with my computer and error messaje 0x8DDD0018 show
in the page, so I tried to start manually this in my system but messaje 1058
appear again, I hope to be clear when explaning... :) Thanks
