Windows Update Hangs

[Haralabis]

The first time I was in Win Update site, during the installation of win
update internet utility, my pc crashed.
After that every time I visit Win Update site, I see the welcome screen
saying:
"Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software...

Depending on your connection speed, this might take a minute. During this
time, you may receive one or more security warnings. Review each security
warning to ensure that the content is signed by Microsoft, and then click
Install or Yes to install the software."

but no matter how much I wait, nothing happens.

Please advise

Take a look at C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log (no space in its name if
it's on V5).
If on V4 of Windows Update, see C:\Windows\Windows Update.log

When you look at that file, get the entries for the last date (at bottom
of file) . Then copy & paste back into a reply here.

Amongst many other possibilities, be sure you have not disabled acceptance
of ActiveX controls. Windows Update site needs to send you a set of
controls !

#1. Please say which version / edition of Windows this is. Win2000,
Windows XP, or ??
#2. Your log extract is from the 16th of September. Are you sure between
then & now there was no run to Windows Update ?

#3. If this is XP, take alook at my prior reply & look for the *other* log.

#4. The log for 16th Sept shows 2 Errors:

See iuhist.xml for

Had you picked a "driver" to download?

#5. It appears your versions of the Windows Update controls are out of date
/ & not the most current.

#2. I visit everyday the Windows Update Site (through the shorcut in
IE>Tools).
and there is where it hangs.
#3. No luck
#4. I cannot recall downloading a driver
