When I try to apply the Security Update for Microsoft Office Excel 2003
(KB951548) I get the error code 779 and the update fails. I have trawled the
web but found no solution. What does error 779 refer to? Any suggestions
towards a solution are welcome.

I'm running Vista Business SP1 and Office 2003 SP3 on an HP Compaq 8510p.

Please post your exact symptoms. Try searching %windir%
for an install log for that update and then try to find some context
for that code. Also, in case the code you are giving us is actually
a hex value search also for its decimal equivalent, 1913.

If 1913 appears to be relevant to your symptom you could also
do a web search with that value instead...

For grins...

(Live Search for
-"total views" (MSFT OR MVP) error 1913 office site:microsoft.com
)

<quote>

Edition 2003 -- Error 1913. Setup cannot update file
C:\Windows\system32\mapisvc.inf. Verify that the file exists in your system
and that you have sufficient permissions to update it.
</quote>

Seems that if the value is hex that its decimal equivalent would have
a particular filename associated with it. Look for and report that as well.

Note that the above quote represents an example of the *format* of the
message you might see as a result of your search. You would very likely
see a completely different file which could not be accessed.

However, you may get some useful ideas from the resolution suggestions
the other poster received.

BTW if you are trying to install a manually downloaded copy of this update
your symptoms would be independent of WU and so they would have more
relevance in a newsgroup which specializes in updating Office products.
Cross-posting to it for convenience.
