URGE With Media Player 11 on VISTA

I just bought a new Sony VGN-SZ491N/X with windows vista and Windows Media
Player 11.0.6000.6324. When I attempt to install urge, i get the following
message:
Error 1304.Error writting file C:\ProgramData\Desttop\URGE.lnk. Verify that
you have access to that directory
When I contacted URGE they redirected me to Microsoft and gave the following
reply:

"We have reviewed your inquiry and believe it is best addressed by
Microsoft's Windows Media Player 11 Support team. Please contact them at
866-492-4868, or visit Microsoft's Windows Media Knowledge Center
(http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/knowledgecenter/default.aspx)
for more support information on how to un-install Windows Media Player 11
from Windows Vista."

Does anyon know how to fix this?

Hi Charles,

How are you trying to install Urge, from within Media Player or from their
website?

When I install it from within Media Player I get all the correct steps
(downloads, prompts to install, elevation request for the installer, warning
to close the player during URGE install, etc) with no error messages.

When I install it from their website, I download the package and run it
without WMP running, I get the Run confirmation dialog, an elevation request
from the installer, the URGE installer (all defaults accepted) ending up
with an URGE icon on the desktop and a "installation complete" dialog asking
me if I want to launch URGE.

In neither one do I get any error messages.

Can you please provide more information on how you're installing it (from
WMP or from their website)
and what you see as you go through the steps to install it?

I've tried several times to install URGE and have performed it from within
WMP two differnent ways (select login from the menubar and select Urge
download from the screen), directly from their web site, and I've also
downloaded it to my harddrive and gotten the same results every time. Of not
Uurg did install on the same version of WMD 11 (11.0.6000.6324) and VISTA
home on a new HP laptop but no mater what I do it won't install on the Sony.
What research that I've perform indicate that it is a Sony only problem.
URGE told me to find out from how to install an older version of media player
on my machine.
Any other suggestions?

Hi Charles,

If you're using Windows Vista on the Sony, you cannot put a lesser version
of WMP on the system. If this is a Sony only problem, my first question
would be what is Sony doing differently than anyone else.

I know that OEM systems come with lots of pre-installed software, perhaps
one of them is causing the problem? I'm only guessing here because I've
never seen this behavior before with URGE but I have seen this kind of
behavior caused with other stuff and third party software.

Have you done any special configuration of your Sony system prior to
trying the URGE install?

I haven't configured it in any special way. I was on the phone with Sony
help for a couple of hours and that didn't help. I've installed and uploaded
every patch from the sony webpage and that didn't help. I'm really at the end
of my wits about this. If I knew what Sony was doing different then I'd move
past it. Is it possible to find the related files on the HP computer that
works with URGE then just paste them into the sony? Or are there registry
entries that I need to edit to allow installation?

I've had the same issues and have posted them in a different thread. To
date, I've not found a resolution. Urge has me jumping through hoops by
telling them version numbers, installation steps, and now log tracking of the
installation to try and determine the issue. Perhaps it is a sony issue, but
it also seems to affect users who have vista home premium and WMP
pre-installed. I'm baffled at this point.

I just bought a Sony VAIO, w/ Windows Media Player 11 and Windows Vista. I
have Urge working on my work laptop w/o a problem but keep getting errors
just like Charles when I try to play on my new Sony laptop.

I've even tried to uninstall Urge, but can't find it on the list of programs
in control panel. I can't even find Windows Media Player so that I can
manually reinstall.

I just tried to do a system reset and that doesn't even work. I've chosen
every possible restore point and none of them can complete the reset.

DId I buy a bad computer????? I"ve had it exactly 24 hrs now.

Reinstalling WMP would not and could not address this. It's an issue in
Urge's MSI install.

Windows Media Player cannot possibly address this in any way shape or form.
Anyone telling you that is misguided or misinformed at best.

Charles - I also had this problem with a Sony VGN-FZ140E. I read multiple
postings, and researched lots of options. I came to the conclusion, based on
some other errors I was seeing, that Sony's install of Vista on the laptops
was not done correctly (see MS KB article 929831 -
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929831/en-us) since other 'junctions' also
seemed to not be working correctly.
I ended up reinstalling Vista from the Sony recovery set, and Urge then
installed correctly.

Now if I could just stop the 'COM Surrogate has stopped working' issues with
Urge! :-(

I sort of have a problem too with URGE. Whenever I call up the
store.urge.com page through Windows Media Player 11 on VISTA on my Toshiba
Laptop, I get the message "No such error found. Error
code:flashNotInstalled", and I just subscribed to it on a free trial. How do
I get flash to work?

That means that Adobe Flash isn't properly installed. I believe if you
check on the Adobe site they have a reinstaller that should fix this. =(

Thanks to SysInterals Junction tool!

I think the problem with Vaio images is their junctions point to a Y:
drive instead of a C drive.

Ok, sorry, still excited, let me back up...

So we know this has to do with messed up NTFS junctions, right? Well,
the C drive will have a junction that points Documents and Settings to
C:\Users...well it SHOULD anyway, but on VAIOs, it points to Y:
\Users...in fact, every junction I've found on my VAIO points to this
mysterious Y drive.

I'm sure this was some engineer's share he was testing on when they
created the images.

>From a Command prompt, you can "dir /aL" (L doesn't have to upper),
and it'll show you the junction links. It will only show you the
junctions within that directory. For our purposes, we only care about
the ones in C:\ and C:\ProgramData.

If you're having this problem with Urge on Vista, chances are yours
are pointing to a Y drive.

Here comes the great SysInternals tool...I love these tools. Been
using them for years.

You can get Junction from TechNet's SysInternals site.

To get the urge installer, you'll need to first copy the junction.exe
into your Windows\System32 folder so you can run it from anywhere

Next, you'll need to run the following commands:

> junction -d "C:\Documents and Settings"
> junction -d "C:\ProgramData\Desktop"
> junction -d "C:\ProgramData\Start Menu"

Now you should be able to run the Urge installer successfully. Your
Urge Start Menu shortcut won't really be created, but who cares, I was
able to run Urge within WMP 11, download my music DRM licenses, play
stuff, etc.

I haven't tested buying anything, but I don't see why that won't work.
If it doesn't we can fiddle with things further.

Now I need to get back to Sony support and see if they're aware of
this fix...

I'm sure the rest of our VAIO junction points are FUBARed as well, but
apparently URGE is the first program to ever actually use them and
care.

At least we know now how to easily manage our own junctions in Vista.
