Hi everyone,

I got a problem when installing Windows Media Encoder x64 on a Windows 2003
x64 Server. I've already enable Windows Image Acquisition and Windows Audio
as the requirement stated at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/encoder/sysreq.aspx

However, when I install the file I downloaded from Microsoft
(WmEncoder64.exe) it gave me the following error:

There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as
part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel
or package vender.

I've checked the Event log and the system logged the following error during
that installation:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MsiInstaller

Here is the server's configuration:

OS: Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x64 Edition Service Pack 2

Any help and hint will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Of course, you'd want to be administrator to install this. Are you ?

If you re-run the install, typically the install files are unpacked to
somewhere like C:\WINNT\Temp or Documents and Settings\Temp depending
on the installing user.

At the point when the rollback install appears, those files should
still be present and unpacked. You may be able to complete the install
or diagnose more issues by cloning the unpacked files before they're
deleted (which is when you OK the dialog box)

Thanks for the information provided.

I've tried to install the program again with administrator account but still
got the same error as before. Then I checked Windows directory for LOG files
and I found two files (WMSTypeLib64.log and WMFDist64.log) and when I opened
those files I found the following logs:

[WMSTypeLib64.log]
0.015:
================================================================================
0.015: 2007/12/07 18:11:56.574 (local)
0.015: k:\3ec7165df52ae08f66a4c017a71643\update\update.exe (version 6.1.22.0)
0.015: Failed To Enable SE_TAKE_OWNERSHIP_PRIVILEGE
0.015: Setup encountered an error: You do not have permission to update
Windows Server 2003.
Please contact your system administrator.
0.015: You do not have permission to update Windows Server 2003.
Please contact your system administrator.
0.015: Update.exe extended error code = 0xf004
0.015: Update.exe return code was masked to 0x643 for MSI custom action
compliance.
0.016:

So is my "administrator" account does not have enough privilege to proceed
the installation? Thanks in advance.

Oh silly me. I found out my account does not have the right to in "Take
ownership of files or other objects" under "User Rights Assignment" in "Local
Security Policy". I've solved the problem. Thanks.

Hi,
i get the same error message. But according to my logfiles, the reason differs:
0.078: ================================================================================
0.078: 2010/10/05 08:33:18.247 (local)
0.078: d:\2bd26453e44b93d8182a5595\update\update.exe (version 6.1.22.0)
0.078: InitializeCustomStringTable: Failed to create a custom string table.
0.078: Not enough storage is available to process this command.
0.078: installation did not complete.
0.078: Update.exe extended error code = 0x8
0.078: Update.exe return code was masked to 0x643 for MSI custom action compliance.
0.093: ================================================================================

Can somobody tell me what "not enough storage" means and how to solve this problem? There is definitely enough hard drive memory and 16 GB of RAM should be enough, too.

Thanks!

In my case it's a Win 7 Ultimate system.

...and it only has 8 GB of memory, not 16 GB like i said before.

After installing Expression Encoder 4 (the free version) I could install the x64 Windows Media Encoder 9. Maybe EE4 installs WMFDist11?
