clients not installing updates

i have installed wsus on a windows 2003 sp1 server and clients (windows 2000
& xp) are being detected and i amnually assign them to groups.

i have approved updates to be installed, but the clients do not install
them. the following is an excerpt of the windowsupdate.log file:

i also have the following error message on the home page of my wsus console
and i am buggered if i can figure it out:

One or more Update Service components could not be contacted. Check your
server status and ensure that the Windows Server Update Service is running.
Non-running services: SelfUpdate


any help would be greatly appreciated.

stupid question maybe because the clients are being detected,
are the clients bits service and update service running?
Are your updates scheduled to the clients?
Also, The selfupdate virtual directory must be on
a site running on port 80 and anonymous must be enabled.
Maybe this is helpfull.

Tell me about your WSUS server, and the number of clients being supported,
and the configuration of your policy(s).
