Hello,

I have a customer, that is running Windows 2003 SBS and they receive random
error messages in the event logs concerning POP3 Connector Event ID 1071 Core
which says: "An error occurred when Exchange Server attempted to deliver a
message. The message is in the SMTP queue." The problem is that when POP3
connector attempts to download message from our ISP servers the message gets
deleted and is not forwarded to the Exchange recipient at all - instead a NDR
is generated which says: mspop3connecto...@validomain.com no
mailbox here by that name - 5.1.1 (chkuser). It happens very rarely, but
still some messages are not being delivered.

I have already tried re-registering imbreg.exe - it didn't helped much.

Previously, I had a similar problem on very same server with delivery within
my own domain (then this NDR message and eventid 1071 were much more
frequent), however I worked it around by playing around with recipient
policies.

I would be grateful if someone could give me a hint on how to get rid of the
remnants of these problematic errors.

Thanks,
Tomasz

BTW. I forgot mentioning that I use a smarthost to deliver the messages.

I suspect this is because Exchange Server is not responsible for said
email...

Even if you are not using Exchange Server to get your email (you are
using the POP connector?), you still need to set it up to work
'locally'. Then Exchange Server will handle the email coming back in
(the NDR) - otherwise it will not handle it or deliver it, as it is not
responsible for it.

That said, not sure if I follow your message that well - I might be
barking up the wrong tree. Do feel free to elaborate. :) Is it ok if
you use the real email addys (at least the domain) - as it's probably
easier to follow what you are trying to say, and, one can check into
things a bit nore (eg http://www.intodns.com/)

This is a known issue when using the POP3 Connector to retrieve mail. One
workaround I've seen (but haven’t tried) is to add a new smtp address for
the user and specify the mspop3connector. address:

Server Management | Users | <select a user> | Email Addresses (tab) | <New
SMTP type> | Enter: mspop3connecto...@validomain.com |

Ah, indeed - now I follow. :) Not a domain problem, a non-existent addy
@ the domain.

Duncan, thanks for your reply:

I am aware of the fact that I might have not made myself clear because
English is not even my second language ;) anyhow, the problem itself is a bit
complex too. To get it as clear as possible:

1. I have email service hosted by local ISP (they also take care about
mydomain.com and my webiste).
2. There are 15 users in domain.local on Windows SBS 2003 with Exchange 2003
configured to relay mail to smarthost hosted by the very same ISP.
3. I use POP3 Connector that goes by default with SBS2003.

Now the problem:

1. us...@somedomain.com sends lets say 10 emails to us...@mydomain.com
2. my ISP handles the mail correctly - I can access my ISP's webmail service
and I can see that there are all 10 messages from us...@somedomain.com.
3. Now POP3 Connector downloads the messages from my ISP's mail server. All
messages are being deleted from my ISPs server as POP3 connector downloads
them.
4. An event id 1071 appears in the Windows Event Log for some random message
from these 10. A message in the log is as follows: "An error occurred when

Exchange Server attempted to deliver a message. The message is in the SMTP
queue."

5. NDR message is generated - it is sent to us...@somedomain.com - message
says:
"No user here by that name: mspop3conn...@mydomain.com 5.1.1
(chkuser)".
6. as a result 9 messages are delivered to us...@mydomain.com on my Exchange
server except the random one (I checked if rejected messages have something
in common, but no they do not have anything that would connect them).

As I said earlier - the problem appears rarely, for many different messages
and users within my domain, but it's kind of pain in the ass. I have never
met with similar error before nor did I found any information about it on the
Internet/KB.

Marv, thank you for your reply:

I have made the changes which you have suggested for each user in my domain.
Your resolution really makes sense, since I had tried similar thing, except I
initially thought it was my ISP's problem - so I started to create aliases
for mydomain.com emails starting with mspop3connector.user(truncated).

Thanks, I will monitor for more errors (hopefully they stop now)

Unfortunately, I still have this nasty issue. I just checked log after adding
SMTP with "mspop3connector." and I can see 1071 error again.

Make sure your antivirus software on the server isn’t scanning the following
folders (either real time or scheduled scan):

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small Business
Server\Networking\POP3\Incoming Mail
C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr

Thank you for your kind reply Merv,

I added those paths to the exceptions both for real time and scheduled
scans. Additionally, I have my MDBDATA folder with logs and mailboxes
database moved to other folder and partition, should I also add this folder
to the exceptions?

Regards,
Tomasz

Merv,

I don't want to be too hasty, but it seems that the alarms stopped after
excluding the paths you've suggested in AV software - haven't noticed any
errors for past 36 hours (these would happen at least once in 8hours before
the change). Thank you very much for your great support Merv!
