I have a clean SBS2003 installation (from premium upgrade)
with some application software installed (e.g. office,
ups) not yet live.

This hotfix cannot be applied!!

The error given is 'Fatal error during install'.

I have downloaded the fix twice and run it with the same
results both times.

This 'fix' is also available as a critical windows update
but this will also not install.

Help please anyone?

Why is office on this server? Try uninstalling those Office apps and
try again.

Could you reply with the following files from your machine:
%Windir%\KB832880.log
"%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Windows Small Business Server\stslog.txt"

This will aid in diagnosing the problem. Also, is your Companyweb WSS site
currently functional?

Office is on there so that a few network users can use it
via a VPN and terminal services. UPS software is on there
because the server will be protected by an ups.

So you let your users loose with Administrator accounts via TS on your SBS?
(TS doesn't support App Mode in SBS2003, so you're using Administration
mode?)

Sounds completely crazy to me. <sigh>

Not sure what you mean by companyweb wss site - how can I
tell if its functional?

Also, whilst searching for files/folders I now get the
following error:-

You don't need office on there, VPN users can have office on their local
computer, and save files over the VPN to the server.

If Office cannot be installed, what may be installed then on the server ???
Outlook 2003 is a part of office and must be installed on the server, so why
should'nt we install office ?

Should we trust an operating system that cannot even run such a fundamental
program. What happens if we install other programs that we really need and
that must reside on the server ?

Even if it doesn't always make sense to install office on a server, it
should be possible.

Licenses from Microsoft are not for free you know !

Not practical to work that way because of data volumes -
takes to long to run queries, do opens/saves etc. @ 56k

This is the way we work, the VPN is only for 2 users
of 'administrator' status on rare occasions of having to
work from home. I think you've got sidetracked from the
original problem - can you help with getting the fix to
work or not?

Do you currently have any data in your Sharepoint site? If not, I'd
recommend uninstalling the Sharepoint MSDE via Add\Remove Programs,
uninstall the Intranet component via SBS's entry in A\R Programs, reboot,
re-install the Intranet component via SBS's entry in A\R Programs, and
re-apply the KB832880 patch.

Outlook Should not be instaled on the server, in fact it can cause major
issues. You will get a warning when you try to install Outlook outlook 2003
on the server. The server is not meant to be worked on.

Not.

Office is client applications.
SBS is a server.
Outlook does not get installed on the server, do so at your own peril. (the
installation files get copied to the server, for the purposes of client
install point).

Richard would be well advised to use RWW to connect to a lan workstation for
his heavy use applications, or install a separate terminal server.

There simply isn't going to be any good advice given on how to run client
applications on the server, because there is no good advice to give.

Thanks Bryce, this info enabled me to apply the hotfix.
Just a cautionary note for anyone else that looks at this
because they have the same problem...

The intranet component will not be showing as installed
anyway (this was why the hotfix was issued). Also, after
applying the hotfix you will need to reboot before
installing the intranet component.

Hi Les, our use of VPN and Termservices to (very
occasionally) permit remote working seemed like the best
solution known to us at the time. What is RWW and where
can I learn more about your alternative?

Thanks

Hi Richard,

I presume you have sbs2k3. RWW is the shiny red button that comes with
SBS2k3. If it wasn't there, a major reason to upgrade would not exist.

Start | Help and Support Center.
Enter "remote web workplace" in the search field.
The first hit is Concepts: Understanding the Remote Web Workplace.
There are 6 topics listed there, read through them from top to bottom.
