When connected to Remote Web Workplace in SBS 2008, we can't connect to the
Internal Web site (Companyweb) by clicking that link on the RWW home/menu
page. We're using Internet Explorer to connect to RWW, which returns the
error message "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage."

All other RWW links work just fine.

This problem applies to both the main SBS admin account I use, and also to
standard user accounts. From the SBS Console, I've verified that users'
account settings are enabled to access everything available in RWW, both
using the checkboxes associated with RWW and also assigning the users to the
RWW Users Security Group.

The users also are assigned to the SharePoint Users Security Group, and have
no problems connecting to the Internal Web site locally.

Incidentally, the RWW/Companyweb problem I've described above occurs whether
or not users are connected to RWW locally (from our intranet) or from the
internet.

Am guessing I'll have to dig in to IIS and/or SharePoint central admin, but
would like some guidance before proceeding.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi there,

is the companyweb working from the inside? So said, can you open
http://companyweb from a Client on the LAN?

If not, check this:

The Official SBS Blog : Cannot Access CompanyWeb After Installing..
http://blogs.technet.com/sbs/archive/2008/07/11/cannot-access-company-web-after-installing-948110.aspx
- and/or this -
The Official SBS Blog : Companyweb Inaccessible After Sharepoint 3.0 Service
Pack
http://blogs.technet.com/sbs/archive/2009/05/06/companyweb-inaccessible-after-sharepoint-3-0-service-pack-2.aspx

If you have only authentication issues accessing companyweb directly from
the Server, then it could be this:

The Official SBS Blog : Authentication Issues Accessing Companyweb..
http://blogs.technet.com/sbs/archive/2009/04/17/authentication-issues-accessing-companyweb-from-the-server-itself-after-963027.aspx

If everything from the inside is fine then did you publish TCP-Port 987
(HTTPS/SSL) from your Router/Firewall to the SBS 2008 internal IP-Adress for
accessing the companyweb from the outside/Internet?

Windows Small Business Server 2008 Technical FAQ
[..]
What are the ports I need to open on my firewall?

You may need to open the following ports, depending on the services you want
to make available:

Port 25 TCP – SMTP (Outgoing Exchange e-mail)
Port 80 TCP – HTTP
Port 443 TCP – HTTPS (RWW, OWA, remote desktop or Terminal Server sessions)
Port 987 TCP – External secure Companyweb access
Port 1723 TCP – PPTP (VPN)
If port 80 is not open, then you must specify https:// for RWW connections;
otherwise if port 80 is open you can use http:// and the session will be
redirected automatically to port 443. If your router is configured to use
UPnP, the Internet Address Management Wizard (IAMW) will open port 80.

Hi Oscar,

Thanks for your post.

First, I have same questions with besides via RWW, "is the Companyweb working from the inside? So said, can you open http://companyweb directly from a Client on the
LAN?" Also, have you tried re-run the CEICW wizard to reset the companyweb virtual directory configurations in case you changed the settings by mistake?

If the companyweb totoally does work, please refer to the articles Tobias shared. In addition, please also check the companyweb website timeout value:

How to Change the CompanyWeb Timeout in SBS 2008
http://blogs.technet.com/sbs/archive/2009/06/09/how-to-change-the-companyweb-timeout-in-sbs-2008.aspx

Hope this helps.

all devices are static ip's.

DHCP server & client services are running.
firewall DHCP services are checked.

Fix Network Connections = no errors were found on your network.
SBS2008 BPA = (two messages) local activation permission to the IIS WAMREG
admin service required; also two network cards detected. (one is disabled,
used as a spare)

I had a router last week that said port 987 would forward to the
server. The router log showed blocking. I had to update the router
firmware to fix another issue, delete everything from that firewall
rule and create a fresh rule that works. Just because a rule is listed
does not mean it works.

But if he can not connect to the internal website from the remote web workplace even when he is on the local LAN then does it really matter how the external firewall is configured? Should he not only have access to the site from the LAN and not the WAN if there is a firewall issue?
