WLM only on 1 of my 4 computers started giving me the folllowing error
message about 2 days ago:

Unable to send or receive messages for the Yahoo account. An unknown error
has occurred.

Server: 'pop.att.yahoo.com'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x80004005
Protocol: POP3
Port: 995
Secure(SSL): Yes

I use WLM to get my email from 3 accounts, Hotmail, AOL mail, and Yahoo
mail. It works as before with Hotmail, and AOL mail, but gives me the above
error message with Yaho mail. AT&T is my ISP. I have 3 other computers at
home. WLM works fine on the other computers and can download and send
messages from Yahoo from them.
Deleting all messages from Yahoo mail Inbox using Webmail did not help.
Deleting the Yahoo account, and re-creating it on WLM did not help, updating
to most recent version of WLM did not help, un-installing WLM, and then
re-installing it did not help. Scanning Registery, and disabling Norton
Antivirus did not help either.
I can send messages on my Yahoo account from this computer, but can not
download any. WLM works on my other computer as before perfectly.
Any idea what to do now?

Is your anti-virus set to scan e-mail?

As long as your anti-virus software is set to scan files as they are
opened, scanning e-mail as it downloads or sends is unnecessary and
prone to problems.

With some anti-virus (and anti-spam) programs, simply disabling the
e-mail scanning function doesn't really disable it. It simply tells the
program not to flag any messages. It still processes all the messages
and may still cause send/receive failures. What you may need to do is
uninstall the anti-virus program, then reinstall it using a custom
install option and unselect the e-mail scanning component for
installation.

I do not think the issue is related to my Anti-virus program (Norto 360) . I
have had the same antivirus on this computer for long time. Never had problem
till 2 days ago. I did not change the settings of antivirus recently . The
other 3 computers have the same antivirus program, same setting to scan
email, and WML is still working on the other 3 computers. Even on the
computer I have problem with, it is only with Yahoo mail receiving messages.
I can still send messages from my Yahoo account, recieve, and send from the
other accounts..

Yahoo Plus account ?
Have you tried the suggestion to disable N360 scanning or temporarily disabling Autoprotect, open Windows Mail and retest ?

Yes, I did try disabling Auto-Protect, and email scanning. Still did not
work. AT&T is my ISP, hence my default email address is Yahoo. AT&T outsource
email to Yahoo. So, technically my account is not Yahoo Plus, but AT&T DSL.
mM email server is pop.att.yahoo.com. The outgoing mail still work. I can
send email from WLM on same computer using the Yahoo server, and account.
Only receiving does not work.

Although you indicated you may have done this once already, it might
be worthwhile to do the following again, because in the past that has
fixed the 0x80004005 error for AT&T/Yahoo accounts:

In your browser go to http://mail.yahoo.com and log in with your
AT&T credentials. Then clean out ALL the folders in your webmail.
If you want to save any messages, create a new folder and move those
messages to the new folder. Finally, empty the spam and thrash folders
also. Close webmail, then try Windows Mail again.

I had tried this before, but just for the sake of being sure, I tried it
again twice. I emptied all folders on my webmail including Inbox, Sent,
Trash, and Spam, closed it and launched WLM. When all folders are empty, WML
communicate with the server OK, and I get no errorr messages, and naturally
there is no email to receive. However when the next message arrive and shows
up in my Inbox, I get the same dreaded error messag:

Unable to send or receive messages for the Yahoo account. An unknown error
has occurred.

Server: 'pop.att.yahoo.com'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x80004005
Protocol: POP3
Port: 995
Secure(SSL): Yes

I tiried this again emptying all folders on the web, and all folders in WML.
It did not help eaither. The same error message showed up when the next email
arrived to the empty Inbox folder on the web.

One thing is worth mentioning, my problem occured immediatly after my system
crashed, and failed to restart untill repair mode used. My guess System
Restore was used by the the system to repair itself, but I am not sure.

Any other ideas? Or should I give up on WLM, and move to Mozella email
program?

Out of despair, I un-installed WML again, went to folder
user/AppData/Microsoft/ Windows Live Mail, and deleted Yahoo folder with all
of its content. I also deleted all free files in the Windows Mail Live.
Scanned Registry with Norton 360, restarted my computer, re-installed WML,
recreated my Yahoo account, disabled the Firewall, and tried to get WML to
work. It did not. The dreaded error message showed up again

If nothing else, a trial install of Mozilla Thunderbird will prove once and for all
whether the problem is with Windows Live Mail or with the server.

One other thing to try is a temporary uninstall of Norton 360.
That antivirus has been implicated in a lot of email problems,
although more so in Windows Mail than Windows Live Mail.
Disabling the antivirus is seldom sufficient to get all its tentacles
out of the Windows TCP/IP stack.
The uninstall should be following up by the Norton debris removal
tool since Norton tends to leave a lot of troublesome pieces behind:

Well I Have been able to receive email from my Yahoo acount using OutLook on
the same computer, ( I do not like OutLokk. too slow, and bulky). So, I do
not think the server is the problem. It is somewhere in the relationship
beween WML and the server...
But just for the sake of trying I may instal Thunderbird on this computer
and see if it works

Another immediate update. I just tried Windows Mail on the same computer. It
worked perfectly and received the mail from server without a problem...
Perplexing..
I can not understand where the problem is.. It is limited to receiving mail
from Yahoo acoount only on one computer. On the same computer with same
antivrus/Firewall, Windows Mail, and Outlook have no problems..

Hurra... Hurra the problem solved.
The issue was the file: "Mail.MSMessageStore" which is in the folder
User/AppData/Microsoft/Windows Mail Live
I had deleted it when I deleted all free files in that folder, but I
ovelooked a folder called "Backup" which had a copy of it. Apparently when I
reinstalled WLM after deleting the files, it imported the same file from the
"Backup" folder and used it.
When I deleted both copies of Mail.MSMessageStore. The one in Windows Live
Mail folder, and the one in the subfolder "Backup" I was able to rceive my
email as usual. The price, all stroage folders disappeared, and I had to
reimport them with messages from the back-up copies I made before
un-installing WLM, and deleting the folders..
What a hassel. But I have now a functioning WML. I am assuming that the
crash I had few days ago resulted in corrupting the file Mail.MSMwssageStore

Good to hear you found the cause. For future reference, there is a
procedure for "complete" uninstall/reinstall:

Since your Operating System crashed and failed to restart, the system files or registry might have been corrupted. You probably used 'Last known good configuration' to get it started again. There is probably still some hidden corruption somewhere, possibly within WLMail.

Have you scanned your hard drive for errors since the crash? If not, do that (Vista: My computer->right-click drive->Properties->Tools [tab]->Error-checking [section]->Check now... [button->'Automatically fix file system errors' [check]->Start [button]->Schedule disk check [button]->Restart computer.

For a look at the Chkdsk log, open the Event Viewer:

XP: Start->Run->[type] "eventvwr"->Application->[Type] Information->[Source] Winlogon->[Event] 1001
Vista: Start->Run->[type] "eventvwr"->Windows Logs->Application->[Type] Information->[Source] Wininit->[Event] 1001

(It is normal for Chkdsk remove unused index entries and unused security descriptors every time it is run. These do not indicate a problem with the file system.)

I don't think you revealed what OS you are using, but have you tried setting up the Yahoo account in Outlook Express/Windows Mail? If it works there, you can be more certain the problem is with WLMail itself.

You would be better off trying a *complete* uninstall of WLMail rather than a standard uninstall before reinstalling it, since a standard uninstall leaves parts of the registry, and the Message Store intact. See http://liveunplugged.spaces.live.com/Blog/cns!F92775FC46A390CA!226.entry for the method.

Well it seems I posted my reply a bit too late. I had left it in Drafts while I was busy, and then I posted it without checking for further posts.

Glad you got it sorted.

Your messages should have been 'recovered' when you re-created the database. So you should find them in sub-folders of the 'Recovered items' folder under 'Storage folders'.

Though I read your post after my problem was resolved, I think it would be
very helpful in solving problems that may occur in the futur. I had used
chkdsk after repair mode restarted my system. My OS is Vista home premium.
The one thing I did not know, was how to do a complete un-install. Hence I
opted to deleting all free standing files in folder Windows Live Mail. Now I
know how to do compete un-install. Yes, all my previously stored messages
showe up in the Recovered folder.

I had similar problem. I could send email via POP3 SSL

SO I switched protocols from POP to IMAP... super easy.
Just delete account in WLM and recreate. After hours of trying to figure why Port 995 was not working (it tried everything, lowered security settings, uninstalled my virus /firewall webroot). Finally, I switched to IMAP port 993 and it worked.

You will have to get the right server for your provider but these instructions should work.
