Event ID: 502 Problem With Searching

I have Installed sharepoint 2003 on windows server 2003 machine. I
created a new portal site ok but now i'm trying to get the searching
functionality to work.
When I try to do any searches in my portal site, I get a message
saying
Your search encountered an error. If the problem persists, contact the
portal site administrator.
Also while in the SharePoint Central Administration tool, when I go to
the "Indexes and Propagation" section under "Manage Search Settings"
and I click on my portal site that is listed I get an error:
"Object reference not set to an instance of an object."
I am noticing the following error messages in the event log every 30
seconds:

Server Configuration | Configure Server Farm Account Settings (this is what
we call the creds page).
Re-enter the Configuration Database Administration Account and Default
Content Access Account information here (even if you're sure you entered
them correctly).
